Essential Oil of the Month; Lavender

A little like marmite you either love or hate this highly versatile essential oil. The oil is produced by the steam distillation of the fresh flowering tops of the lavender bush and has a powerful herbal and floral aroma.
Lavender is best known for its ability to aid sleep, relaxation and to help balance the body. It has been shown in human studies "to slow down heart rate, slow blood pressure and put you in a parasympathetic state, which is a relaxed state," says Tiffany Field of the University of Miami School of Medicine, who has studied the effects of lavender on relaxation and sleep.
So how can we use Lavender to help aid our sleep? Don’t fall into the trap of using too much of this oil, less is more. If using it on its own try burning a drop or maybe two in an oil burner (electric ones are now available) in your bedroom before sleep or place a drop on a hankie above your bed or nearby in the room? If you like to bathe before bedtime why not add a drop to your bath water with some sweet orange essential oil. If you want pop it onto your skin please make sure that you add it to a base cream or oil first. Here are some lovely blends that I like to use:-

Sleep/Relaxation Blend

12+ & Adults:
50 ml of vegetable oil or unscented body cream
7 drops of Lavender essential oil
8 drops of Sweet Orange essential oil
5 drops of Frankincense essential oil

Children 7-12:
50 ml of vegetable oil or unscented body cream
5 drops of Lavender essential oil
6 drops of Sweet Orange essential oil
3 drops of Frankincense essential oil

Children 1-7:
50 ml of vegetable oil or unscented body cream
3 drops of Lavender essential oil
4 drops of Sweet Orange essential oil
3 drops of Roman Chamomile essential oil

Babies under 1:
30 ml Vegetable Oil
1 drop of lavender essential oil
1 drop of roman chamomile essential oil
1 drop of orange essential oil

The last blend for babies under one, I give to parents who have attended my infant massage courses and over the years many parents have reported back about the effects of the oils on nappy rash.

Lavender can be useful in many other ways too. Did you know that it is a natural antibiotic, antiseptic, analgesic and antidepressant oil? During the WWII Dr Jean Valnet, of the French Army used lavender to treat burns and infections of injured soldiers.
If you have a headache a great idea is to use a cold lavender oil compress placed on the forehead or back of the neck to help ease it.

Please note: if you are pregnant or suffer with low blood pressure please use lavender oil in very low doses. Also if you are using an essential oil for the first time it is best to do a patch test first.
