We have stayed several times at Red Mill House. If you love birds, then this is your place. The rooms are comfortable and the breakfast on the upstairs veranda is delicious and expansive using local fruits where possible. Both hosts are very knowlegable about the area (and birds) and their contacts to book you into local excursions very reliable. Walking distance to the Daintree River, the B & B is well suited in a very isolated environment, but just 1.5 hours drive from Cairns.

This place seemed nice at first although the grounds are actually quite small and the pool shaded, small and cold. Noone used it.There is no Tv in the room and as there is little to do in the evening after 8 and it is dark so we missed it. There was one in the small lounge area but we were told that 'it is not switched on much' which was a bit off putting. We did not feel welcome in the lounge as it was so small and if 2 others were there we would have been in the way. The breakfast was good enough and we were given bird watching advice and a tour but this was promised in the advertising. the evening meals nearby are very limited and at times non existent. The worst thing was that we were shouted at loudly in front of the other guests and ostracised by both of our hosts because were arrived 30 mins late for a meal which we had to book at the B and B becuase there was nothing else. We arrived late because the roads are very windy and you have to take a ferry to get there from Cape Trib. I apologised a lot but we were treated as if we were pariahs, even the next morning when Kindly Trish overcharged us for a meal which she siad would be cost price. I think it was because she knew I would not know what cost price would be as we came from the UK. I realised afterwards when I went to an Aus supermarket for the first time. We were so happy to leave there as they made me and my daughter feel unwelcome. We went to other B and Bs after and they were so much better and cheaper!

Response from the owner - 4 years ago
It is indeed sad and disappointing to read this review considering the extra time and effort that was spent giving guidance and assistance, trying to please this particular guest. Needless to say, our recollections of the "shouting at loudly in front of other guests" don't seem to match that of the reviewer. Red Mill House in Daintree is a small B&B run by a husband and wife team, catering to nature lovers, birdwatchers and people with an interest in eco-tourism and the conservation of The Daintree. It is located in the small village of Daintree (pop. approximately 60) It is not, and does not pretend to be a resort with resort facilities. All our facilities are clearly listed and shown on our website. There are several very good dining options close by Red Mill House and, as one would expect, these need to be booked in advance due to the small numbers of potential guests, otherwise they will not open! We encourage all intending guests to read this and other traveler forums, and to review the Red Mill House web site thoroughly, so that they may fully understand what Red Mill House is about - it is not for everybody, and we would rather people not come and stay with us if they are not going to be comfortable with our service and facilities and the facilities of Daintree Village. We stand by our reputation for good service gained from 10 years experience, catering to guests who know and appreciate our ethos.

We had an excellent stay at Red Mill House (4/4/12-6/4/12). The owners were friendly and knowledgeable and the breakfast was delicious. We would definitely recommend a visit.

The highlight of my holidays in Queensland was definitively my 4 days stay in Red Mill House. The hosting couple, Trish and Andrew, pampered me from the minute I arrived to the second I left. They took me on a hike and showed me the colorful local bird world around the house and gave me lots of valuable tips for excursions around Daintree. They even made the bookings for some of them. I also fondly remember the delicious breakfasts on the porch overlooking their beautiful rainforest garden. The rainforest scenery around Red Mill House is absolutely gorgeous, it is a perfect starting point for hiking, boating, bird watching in walking distances or for exploring the beaches along the Daintree forest by car. There are also some very nice restaurants in close driving distances. If I ever get a chance to return to Daintree (hopefully with my partner next time) I will definitively book this picturesque and peaceful place again. Thank you, Trish and Andrew, for making my stay so enjoyable!

This is an outstanding place to stay if visiting the Daintree Rain Forest area. Trish and Andrew are great hosts, the breakfasts the best in Australia and the accommodations terrific. The inn keepers were very helpful in making sure we saw all the sties and places that we should visit. We loved our stay here and would highly recommend the Red Mill House to travelers to this wonderful part of Australia.
