I've been ignoring this page for quite some time - I suppose it's because I'm currently focused on work more than anything else. I've received many emails asking about the new series and if I'll ever go back and finish Memoirs.
Here's my current status -
Over the past year, I've been tinkering with the first novel in my new series aiming for perfection. However, I've recently come to understand that perfection is a temporary state - what we view today as being perfect will somehow be flawed tomorrow. So last month I let go and began the arduous task of finding an agent.
This is my least favorite part of the process. Purposely putting yourself out there for criticism and rejection is uncomfortable and it chips away at your self-esteem with tiny, painful bites. But, it's necessary - horrible and soul-crushing but necessary. And I hate 'necessary' almost as much as I loathe obligations - both are unpleasant and horrifying. Both require something of you that you're not keen on giving - in most cases, your dignity.
I often lay awake at night second guessing myself - I re-write scenes and then erase them in my mind and start over. Sometimes I carefully sneak out of bed, grab my laptop and tinker some more only to delete it later that morning. I honestly struggle to keep this first book from becoming an epic Russian novel. But in my mind, it has to be perfect. I can't make any mistakes. And there's a natural urge to protect yourself from rejection, either by giving up or shrinking so deeply into one's self that we create an illusion of respite in order to feign off the unpleasantness.
As for now, all I can do is forge ahead with the awareness that this is part of the journey. An artist must accept that part of their soul is always up for scrutiny and it's a vicious reality. I've watched my husband brush off rejection and horrific insults with such gallantry, that I'm left speechless. It's something I aspire to. In the meantime, I accept that he may be more evolved when it comes to dealing with criticism. My first instinct is to egg the house of the critic while my husband's response is to smile and shrug his shoulders. And I freely admit that his attitude is somewhat vexing. Currently, I couldn't achieve such zen without the help of an adult beverage or maybe six.
As for Memoirs, I wish I could say I have the desire to finish the project. Maybe one day I will. Truthfully, I miss my old friends and think about them often. But life sometimes moves in uncertain currents and we're forced to change directions in order to save ourselves. Four years ago I woke up and decided I needed to shelf Memoirs. It wasn't that I was unhappy with the work, it was primarily based on the need to move on and challenge myself. If you know me personally, you know I hate when things become monotonous and stale.
I wish I had more exciting news to share. But in the meantime, I hope you'll keep checking in and writing me all those lovely emails that keep me motivated and focused.

Many Blessings to you all,
Rebekah

My husband is taking final orders for his 2, full colored, art books. Go to http://ericarmusik.com/art-books.html to place your order now. Each book contains not only detail shots but narratives from his various collectors. One book is devoted to his religious work and the other focuses on the comprehensive collection which also includes his latest painting, titled, Circe. All the books will be sighed.
