Nice bit of jiggery pokery. http://ow.ly/PTCGH
These surreal shots are the brainchild of art-director, Stephen McMennamy, from Atlanta Georgia, USA. And while the hilarious scenes might look like the result of photoshop trickery, the eye-catching images are actually created by taking two separate photos and splicing them together to make one picture. Dad-of-two, Stephen, admitted to always having had a creative itch but it was Instagram that inspired him to launch the Combophoto pro...

Shane Black took the snap at the summit of Mauna Kea on Hawaii, more than 13,500 feet above sea level. The volcano in the background is Kilauea. To create the picture, the snapper patched together 23 individual frames, each given a 15-second exposure. “Adding a human figure into a photo really helps to show the scale of the scene and it also gives the viewer a sense of being there for themselves, as that person,” said Black, adding: “I love stargazing and being humbled by the universe around us.”

The Show at Crater Lake
Photograph by Keith Marsh

Specializing for the past four years in what he calls astrophotographic landscapes, Keith Marsh has captured the Milky Way in locations from Alaska to Cuba. He photographed Oregon’s Crater Lake looking south from the north rim, where the Milky Way is brightest. “I also wanted to have something in the foreground for additional interest and spent several hours during the day searching for just the right spot,” he writes. “As it turned out, this old dead tree is very popular with photographers, and over a period of several hours there were as many as 20 photographers huddled in this same spot.” The lights on the horizon are from Klamath Falls, Oregon, about 60 miles away.

Planet Iceland
Photograph by Sophie Carr

“This [was] taken at the volcanic beach at Stokksnes in southeastern Iceland in February 2015,” writes photographer Sophie Carr. “I used a two-second exposure to capture the water trails as the waves receded over rocks at the edge of the beach, just as the sun was setting behind me, illuminating the mighty Vestrahorn mountain and some peaks in the far distance.”

A Sister’s Care
Photograph by Ali Al-Zaidi

Losing a mother is especially painful for young children, and older children may take on the bulk of the responsibility afterward, writes photographer Ali Al-Zaidi. Here, a young woman cares for an infant sibling in Ethiopia. “But still the sadness shows on the little kid’s face, because something is missing, which is the mother,” Al-Zaidi writes.

WHY

The world of multi-media, around us every second of our waking lives, is developing at a staggering pace. Such mind-blowing evolution is exciting, with new technologies and developments being launched on what often seems like a daily basis. It's difficult to keep up. However, such proliferation of visual effects means that some inevitably die out.

One form of media, however, remains timeless. Still images are non-obtrusive, allowing the onlooker to intimately discover all the qualities of the image at their leisure, while developing their own unique and personal interpretation of the piece before them. They are there to be enjoyed, and will always be so.

WHO

I count myself as being very fortunate to have already experienced and enjoyed a wide range of cultures, lifestyles and backgrounds during my first 40 years. From the slums of Rio de Janeiro through to the most wealthy of European capitals, I have lived, breathed and worked in these vastly different environments. This has led me to appreciate and understand how different societies and people work, what makes them tick, and more importantly, how best to capture their unique, life changing moments.

My family and I live on the Shropshire / Staffordshire border and love the delights the area brings. Any spare moments are enjoyed through my other passion of cycling.
