Corazón del Fuego
Photograph by Andrew Shepard

Wanting to get a closer look at Fuego, a highly active volcano in Guatemala, Andrew Shepard hiked the adjacent Acatenango Volcano and camped near the summit. “Under the moonlight I set my tripod up just outside the tent, and at around 1:30 a.m. we awoke to the rumbling of the ground and the sound of a breath-stealing explosion,” Shepard writes. “I scrambled to the camera just in time [to] capture a moonlit and lava-covered Fuego as it put on this beautiful display of activity and power."

A snowy owl glides inches above a snowplain in a hunt for food. The owls fit in perfectly with their surroundings as both the male and female, which has darker markings on her feathers referred to as barres, hunt for voles. The female is so low to the ground she is almost touching it as she spots her prey in the snow. Nature photographer Rick Dobson captured the bird hunting in corn fields near his home, just outside of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Bushfire Season
Photograph by Pierre Destribats

Lightning on a stormy evening near Port Hedland, Western Australia, ignites bushfires that send up an orange glow. A common threat to safety in the province during summer months, bushfires can start without warning and move quickly through vast areas.

So, with 226 riders, Cyclists Fighting Cancer will be better off for everyone's efforts - thanks very much to all riders and helpers alike, for making it a great event, despite the awful weather conditions.

The Pinnacle
Photograph by Chris Prescott

“We were near the summit of Sgurr Dearg, [also called] the Inaccessible Pinnacle, a famous feature of the Cuillin Ridge on Scotland’s Isle of Skye, shooting a behind-the-scenes documentary about the making of 'The Ridge,’” writes Chris Prescott of the Cut Media short film featuring trials cyclist Danny MacAskill.

“MacAskill grew up on Skye and wanted to make a film that showed off the beauty of the island. A traverse of the full Cuillin Ridge is considered one of the classic mountaineering challenges in the U.K. The film was shot over two weeks.

WHY

The world of multi-media, around us every second of our waking lives, is developing at a staggering pace. Such mind-blowing evolution is exciting, with new technologies and developments being launched on what often seems like a daily basis. It's difficult to keep up. However, such proliferation of visual effects means that some inevitably die out.

One form of media, however, remains timeless. Still images are non-obtrusive, allowing the onlooker to intimately discover all the qualities of the image at their leisure, while developing their own unique and personal interpretation of the piece before them. They are there to be enjoyed, and will always be so.

WHO

I count myself as being very fortunate to have already experienced and enjoyed a wide range of cultures, lifestyles and backgrounds during my first 40 years. From the slums of Rio de Janeiro through to the most wealthy of European capitals, I have lived, breathed and worked in these vastly different environments. This has led me to appreciate and understand how different societies and people work, what makes them tick, and more importantly, how best to capture their unique, life changing moments.

My family and I live on the Shropshire / Staffordshire border and love the delights the area brings. Any spare moments are enjoyed through my other passion of cycling.
