Camus, Sartre, Bukowski: FBI-monitored for literary provocations.
It didn’t take much to get your own FBI file back in the days of J. Edgar Hoover; harboring novel ideas on the nature of human existence would suffice. That’s according to a new piece in the British magazine Prospect, which reports that, starting in 1945 and 1946, the FBI...

What an engaging piece, +Joe Pairman! For someone who stuck it out as a Lit major, the "death of the author" has been instructive in interpreting texts from other frames. This death is the death of authorial ego, of meaning from a monolithic voice.

Tech comm ultimately benefits from this shift to reader/user-orientation. The purposive "design" of language (which I guess is part of Marcia's "Word Up" thesis - would check out her book) to anticipate and respond to reader needs is a compromise/concession from an author (us corporate pens) who no longer has claim as sole authority. Rephrasing what you've said, the Web with its fragmented, multifarious information sources is a return to the collaborative, non-bylined Epic.

Tech comm rolling up its sleeves to wear the hat of a "user advocate" is a much better proposition than one of an "indisputable fount of wisdom". After all, another dictum from postmodern lit theory is "all reading is rewriting".

+Joe Pairman Agree on all points! I like the idea of "authorial care" - it highlights the agency & responsibility of tech comm/content professionals in serving as mediators between companies & (user) communities.
