My review of Twilight Time's new Blu-ray release of Woody Allen's "A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S SEX COMEDY" is up at Cinema Retro: http://www.cinemaretro.com/index.php/archives/9515-REVIEW-WOODY-ALLENS-A-MIDSUMMER-NIGHTS-SEX-COMEDY-1982,-TWILIGHT-TIME-BLU-RAY-EDITION.html
“SMILES OF A CHEKHOVIAN NIGHT”. By Raymond Benson. Most cinephiles know that Woody Allen is a huge fan of Ingmar Bergman. Allen has paid homage to the Swedish master several times, and his 1982 work, A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy, is an example. It draws upon one of Bergman's ...

My review of Twilight Time's new Blu-ray release of Woody Allen's "STARDUST MEMORIES" is up at Cinema Retro: http://www.cinemaretro.com/index.php/archives/9495-REVIEW-WOODY-ALLENS-STARDUST-MEMORIES-1980;-TWILIGHT-TIME-BLU-RAY-LIMITED-EDITION.html
“ALLEN'S 9-1/2”. By Raymond Benson. If one facetiously counted the number of films Woody Allen made beginning in 1969 and throughout the 70s, there would be eight that he wrote and directed (seven of which he also starred in), plus a movie that he only wrote and starred in—Play It Again, Sam, ...

BY RAYMOND BENSON. “A DICKENS DELIGHT”. By Raymond Benson. The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby may not immediately come to mind when naming the most well-known of author Charles Dickens' novels, but it's arguably one of his best. Besides being a cracking good story in print, ...

My review of The Criterion Collection's new Blu-ray release of Robert Altman's "SHORT CUTS" is up at Cinema Retro: http://www.cinemaretro.com/index.php/archives/9410-REVIEW-ROBERT-ALTMANS-SHORT-CUTS-1993,-BLU-RAY-SPECIAL-EDITION-FROM-CRITERION.html
“CARVER COUNTRY ON CELLULOID”. By Raymond Benson. Short story writer and poet Raymond Carver was known for pithy, honest tales of the human condition in modern settings, the literary equivalent of cinematic “neo-realism.” His critically-acclaimed work was published mostly in the seventies and ...

“CLAWS, LUST, AND LEWTON”. By Raymond Benson. Sometimes brilliance in Hollywood comes in very modest packages. Who would have thought that a string of horror films made on shoestring budgets, with no star power, and little attention from the studio, would become classics in style and cinematic ...

“DOWN HERE YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN”. By Raymond Benson. When a film has been previously issued on VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray, a Criterion upgrade is still always welcome because you'll get stuff that further enhances the viewing experience. Filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen were once notoriously camera-shy ...

“DOING THE CHAMELEON”. By Raymond Benson. Wikipedia defines “mockumentary” as a portmanteau (a linguistic blending of two words) of the words mock and documentary. Essentially, it's a phony, comic documentary. Woody Allen didn't invent this sub-genre of the comedy motion picture, ...

New darkly comic action thriller short story, THE MacGUFFIN, is now available for only 99 CENTS for Amazon Kindle! http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NBSOYF3/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1483917524&sr=1-1

Wikipedia defines a MacGuffin as "a plot device in the form of some goal, desired object, or other motivator that the protagonist pursues, often with little or no narrative explanation.” In this case, the MacGuffin is a purple bag recovered from an airport baggage claim. The CIA, the FBI, Middle Eastern operatives, Japanese Intelligence, and the Mafia all want it... but does anyone really know what's inside? One thing is clear--whoever's in possession of it won't have very long to live.

“ROMAN HOLIDAY?” By Raymond Benson. One of the great director Federico Fellini's more curious motion pictures is his 1972 part-documentary/part-fictional collage that consists of “impressions” of Rome, both past and present. In many ways, it is the middle chapter of a trilogy that comprises ...

“ALTMAN'S NORTHWEST TERRITORY”. By Raymond Benson. Robert Altman's self-proclaimed “anti-western,” based on the novel McCabe by Edmund Naughton, is one peculiar piece of cinema that fits right in with the “New Hollywood” movement that began in the late 60s and continued through most of the next ...

“SOME SHORT FILMS ABOUT COMMANDMENTS”. By Raymond Benson. Much has been written and said about director Krzysztof Kieślowski's ten-hour mini-series originally broadcast on Polish television in 1988. The late Stanley Kubrick, who rarely commented on other filmmakers' works, wrote in a foreword to ...

“THE LADY VANISHES ONE MORE TIME”. By Raymond Benson. The Criterion Collection has issued a Blu-ray upgrade to a previous winning DVD release—Carol Reed's World War II suspense adventure, Night Train to Munich. It's a terrific example of the fine cinema Britain was managing to produce even while ...

While this place has a nice atmosphere and good service, my food was horrible. Caveat--I lived in New York City for a decade. Then I lived in Chicago for two decades. I *know* what authentic Italian food is supposed to be. This tasted like high school cafeteria "Italian food." First I ordered lasagne. It turned out to be 60% marinara sauce that was too sweet and was loaded with chunks of tomatoes (which I hate), 30% cheese, and 10% pasta and meat. So it was really a plate of chunky awful tomato sauce. I sent it back and opted for what I thought would be safe spaghetti and meatballs with meat sauce instead of marinara. Again-- high school cafeteria quality. Too salty, too much tomato chunks, not good. I didn't eat it. Then they charged me for the item on our bill. I even showed this review to the manager up to this sentence, and he smiled and said, "Sorry," but didn't offer to take off the item from the bill. Avoid. Texans wake up! This is not Italian food!
