Bringing space back down to Earth!
Introduction
After nearly two decades in Information Technology, I made the leap from "backyard" to "professional" astronomer. I observe and catalog asteroids in our solar system, and have two publications on variable stars. I also assist with various astronomy education and outreach efforts.

I've blogged for Universe Today, Phys.orgastrobio.net , the Planetary Society , and my own blog, Dear Astronomer. I was co-director of outreach for Yuri's Night 2012, and am currently a NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador. I also do outreach and informal education at CosmoQuest. You can follow me on twitter at: @DearAstronomer

During what little spare time I've got, I play guitar, "paper and dice" role-playing games, table top games, and pursue all things nerdy/Sci-Fi.

Add me to your circles if you are a fan of space exploration, science fiction, and all things nerdy. My shenanigans are cheeky and fun!

Opinions stated are my own and do not reflect those of any organization or entities I am affiliated with.
Bragging rights
Contrary to popular belief, I did not destroy 3/4 of a star system... more like 5/6 - it's not an exact science.

This should make an EXCELLENT target for the +James Webb Space Telescope to study in greater detail in a few years!

Exciting news indeed, as this is very close to being the "holy grail" of exoplanet discoveries!

h/t to my pal +Scott Lewis for sharing the link!

BREAKING!
Confirmed Earth-sized planet around habitable zone!

The Kepler Space Telescope team has announced that the Kepler-186 system has an Earth-sized planet orbiting in the star's habitable zone, named Kepler-186f

Though previous planets have been discovered in habitable zones, they've been about 40% larger than Earth, however Kepler-186f is far closer in size to the planet that provides a habitat for life to exist, our own.

LOL! +Mark Marley - I should have been more precise, as we all know that distance doesn't exactly correspond to brightness. ;-)

Today IS a good day to learn Klingon!

This is probably the best "Rosetta Stone" ad ever.  Michael Dorn *NAILS it as a product pitchman.

Disclaimer: Yes, this was an April fool's prank. +ThinkGeek is notorious for fake product ads on April fool's, although some April Fool's products HAVE been produced. My favorite is the Taun Taun sleeping bag.

This was a smart political move to preempt the likely move by the Russians to deny the US access to Soyuz, which would have been much more embarrassing.

The ISS Live! clock has been extended.

Thanks to the efforts of +michael interbartolo and other +NASA advocates, the ISS Live! Telemetry page has been given a reprieve!

Feel free to drop by the site and give NASA your suggestions on how to make it even better!

GWAR Singer Oderus Urungus Deat at 50

What die-hard metal-head hasn't seen at least one live GWAR show?

Reports are coming in that Dave Brockie was found dead in his home yesterday. No cause of death has been released yet.

Here's a fitting tribute video to #GWAR  - Their performance of "Carry On My Wayward Son" for +The Onion

Warning: Song/Video is a hard pg-13.

Drinking the Apple Kool-Aid

For eight months now I've owned a #macbookproretina  and have been running Fedora 19 on it.

Today I decided to spend a day working in #OSX , having maybe logged two hours in OSX over the past 8 months.  I have to say, coming from the world of #linux  , the Apple Kool-Aid tastes pretty good.

Will I make a permanent switch and use OSX full-time? I'm not sure yet, but there's not much to stop me from doing so.

Fedora is a bad example of an end-user Linux Distro. It is highly unstable and full of warts. A better experience might be had with Ubuntu.

Comic Book Physics 101: Mass of Captain America's Shield

+Rhett Allain from +WIRED posted a great article that walks us through physics 101 to determine the mass of Cap's shield.

If you are a +Marvel Entertainment comic book fan, and don't mind some equations and charts, give the article a read. You'll find it pretty interesting.
