Today we are very proud to announce the first printed edition of Rear Curtain magazine. Almost a year ago when we started pulling together the idea for Rear Curtain, we envisioned a regularly published print magazine to complement our online presence. Three maybe four times a year. We knew it would be easier to find and publish stories for the web but we wanted to take it one step further–or rather a step back.

There was a time when stories about every day life and “ordinary” people really mattered, when celebrity didn’t count for more than it should. Time moved slower back then and we all appreciated the people and stories around us, savored them, and gave them a place of importance in our minds and hearts. Today everything happens so much faster. Images come and go as fast as you can read 140 characters and click on a link. We don’t give stories the chance to linger long enough to become part of our world, to help us make sense of all that is happening before our eyes, for them to help shape who we are to become. We believe a printed magazine can do that. You’ve seen most of these stories on our website already but we wanted to do more. As photographers, we can publish our own work on our website or even in a magazine such as this one. However when our work is lifted up by others and given a soapbox as it were, it has the potential to reach more people. It feels less like self-promotion and rather an advancement of our ideas and the values we feel are important.

Our mission is to show the common connection we share no matter where in the world we live but we also have a goal to be a resource for those who wish to become visual storytellers. We reached out to two well-known professional photographers, Gavin Gough and Stephen Urhaney, for their personal insights on storytelling. In their interviews, they share a few trade secrets and talk about their own approaches when creating a visual story. It is not only fascinating to read but instructive.

It wasn’t easy deciding on which stories to include in this issue. We believe in each of the stories we bring you on our website otherwise we wouldn’t publish them at all. If we weren’t limited by costs, all our stories would have been in this issue. But such is the job of an editorial team. We want to take this opportunity to thank all the photographers who have contributed stories to Rear Curtain, here and online.

Without your good work, important stories would be left untold. We are grateful that you placed your faith in us to bring them to a wider audience. To purchase a copy of Issue 1, please click http://www.magcloud.com/browse/issue/298436. You can preview the magazine before purchasing as well as buy just a digital version. We encourage you though to think about picking up the print version. Please let us know what you think by emailing us; we would love to hear from you.

Enjoy!~ Ray, Sabrina and Matt

“Have you ever heard a photographer speaking about the power he or she has over people? Yet it’s unquestionably there. Photography isn’t innocent, it’s riddled with ulterior motives.”~ Martin Parr
