Exchange it for Columbus day.
Election Day should be a national holiday so that everyone has the opportunity to vote.

The US sends people to prison for minor crimes (usually minor drug offenses, three strikes, child support, probation violations, etc.). Then after these people finally get out of prison & have paid for their crimes, society continues to punish them & refuses to give them a job because they have a criminal record (even Walmart won't give you one for at least 10 years after an ARREST for any drug offense, let alone a prison sentence!). What are they supposed to do to support themselves, pay their bills, feed themselves? Even the most determined person will eventually get desperate if they get hungry enough & will turn back to some form of crime just to feed themselves & their family or to keep a roof over their head & clothes on their back. A person can make one simple, stupid, lame mistake & they will pay for it for they rest of their life (long after they've paid their legal 'dues'), because society will never let them forget about it.

This is the kind of disgusting, and cynical politics that has become the trademark of the GOP. Is this a betrayal of your oath of office concerning a matter of National Security? You decide.

Sixteen bowling balls
Swinging from a frame
They move in synch
Then out of synch
Then back in synch again.

This wonderful video was shared on Facebook by Maria Ikenberry, and her excellent explanation of the pendulum wave is pasted below.

The "ooh"s and "aaah"s of the spectators are the best part—well, almost. The best part is truly the beauty of physics in action.

From the original Facebook post:

** What am I seeing? How does this work? **
The length of time it takes a ball to swing back and forth one time to return to its starting position is dependent on the length of the pendulum, not the mass of the ball. A longer pendulum will take longer to complete one cycle than a shorter pendulum. The lengths of the pendula in this demonstration are all different and were calculated so that in about 2:40, the balls all return to the same position at the same time – in that 2:40, the longest pendulum (in front) will oscillate (or go back and forth) 50 times, the next will oscillate 51 times, and on to the last of the 16 pendula which will oscillate 65 times. Try counting how many times the ball in front swings back and forth in the time it takes the balls to line up again, and then count how many times the ball in back swings back and forth in the same time (though it's much harder to keep your eye on the ball in back!).

** Why are they not perfect at the end? **
This large frame is built from wood and is outdoors, which means it expands, contracts, and flexes. Because the position of the frame changes, the cycle lengths are not perfectly aligned. Over time, the minor differences become more pronounced.

** Where is this? **
This was built on private property in the mountains of North Carolina (United States), near Burnsville. It is not open to the public.

** Can I get a copy of this video to use in my classroom? **
I have uploaded a higher-quality video to YouTube: Pendulum Wave Demonstration
You are encouraged to use this video for educational purposes! If you are sharing online, please provide a link back to this video or the YouTube video. This video is licensed CC BY-SA: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/

** How can I make my own? Where can I learn more? **
Here are some links to information about the physics behind this demonstration. There are some small scale versions of this demonstration that can be purchased commercially as well, but if you want a 20’ version like this, you’ll have to make your own! I didn't make this and I don’t have plans for it, but work through the physics at these links and design your own – you’ll learn a lot about physics, math, and construction!

His hypothesis is downright frightening, especially because he has all that data. Thanks for the nightmares, Thomas Piketty. http://u.pw/14hOxBX —Eddie Geller

All Republicans, surprise surprise. It's becoming very clear which party has been purchased wholesale.

Not that this comes as a shock to anyone, but here's some interesting new science on the hygiene hypothesis front.
A new study may have solved the food allergy riddle, while calling into question our antibiotic usage. Yes, the two are tied together.

Had ARI install a roof on a new carport. As with my past experiences, they worked fast and got the job done on time. They are not only the best priced, but they are also the most reliable. Jeff is great at responding to calls and questions. I would recommend them to other people and plan on using them again in the future.

Took my car in for an intermediate service, 15,000 miles. This should take a few hours under normal circumstances. I had an appointment at 11 am. I got there at 10:58 and was out at 11:47. They are awesome. They also gave my car a quick bath before sending me on my way. Not only are they fast, but everyone is super nice. I am glad I bought my Hyundai here and expect to always have my service here too. I had to overwrite my previous review about my purchase here. That was also great. Quick and no BS.

Paul and his crew did an excellent job of installing my new alarm system. They left the place as the found it with no dust or debris anywhere. The whole process, from the initial phone call, estimate, installation, and teaching me how to use it was great. I would highly recommend Protection Alarm to any person or business in need of an alarm or surveillance system.

Bad Experience. Poor customer service. They cracked the shower and refused to fix it or deduct money from the contract so we could fix it. They also provided an estimate on putting up molding and then asked how to do it because the couldn't figure it out.

We just had them out to install a new air conditioning and heating system for my mom. She bought a house in Northridge and the old system was bad. All Four Seasons came out and replaced the entire system in 1 day. They are great and had the best price of all the people we had come out to provide an estimate for the job.
