The Way Forward Update - Rathmullan Harbour Area Development Group
On Monday 6th November, the Rathmullan Harbour Area Development Group (RHAD) had the pleasure of welcoming Joe McHugh TD, Government Chief Whip and Minister of State at the Department of Culture with responsibility for Gaeilge, Gaeltacht and the Islands, to a tour of the Harbour area. The RHAD is part of Rathmullan – The Way Forward and is focused on developing both the Commercial and Marine Tourism aspects of the pier and harbour area.

The tour included a visit to the Pier Head which was busy with crab and herring boats, in addition to Marine Harvest’s on-going operations. The Minister was also able to visit Marine Harvest’s brand new work boat "Croi na Farraige" berthed at the pontoon. When fully commissioned, the boat will be based in the Swilly under the command of David McGloin.

The Group was able to stress the Strategic and Commercial importance of Rathmullan Pier as a 24 hour accessible deep water harbour able to handle large commercial vessels. The Group is following up on this commercial aspect, given the uncertainties surrounding Brexit and the uniqueness of the facilities at Rathmullan. It is anticipated that Donegal County Council will continue their planned programme of maintenance of the viaduct structure to avoid any further deterioration in weight limits.

The issue of a local Harbour Master was raised, and while the appointment of a Harbour Master responsible for 5 ports, including Rathmullan, was noted and appreciated as a step forward, it was emphasised to the Minister that a dedicated Harbour Master would be required to realise the full potential of the port.

Despite the blustery conditions, there was a large turn out of local people who are interested in the pier development and marine activities. Progress on the public toilets was noted, and a commitment was acknowledged from Donegal County Council to provide the adjacent area for the Sailing School Compound on completion of the construction phase, sufficiently large for purpose.

The tour included a walk around the ramparts of the Old Battery with discussion about the potential for developing this site following the successful hosting of recent events. The Group was able to demonstrate that the construction of a walkway from the side of the Putting Green to the Battery would open up the site, with spectacular views up and down the Swilly, and was encouraged to work with rural development Groups for detailed planning and funding.

This was a great opportunity to showcase the latent potential of Rathmullan Harbour for both Commercial and Marine Leisure activities, and the visit by the Minister was greatly appreciated.

If you are interested joining the RHAD Group or require more information on the facilities and opportunities then please contact John Gallagher on 086 440 5740.

Our thanks goes to Patricia at the White Harte for the welcomed tea and refreshments and respite from the wind!
