Oh I'm glad you said Hangouts uses this pattern. I was having trouble imagining how this worked during the IO talk.

+Rian Yulianto W Watch the I/O session on Android design. The drawer and the sliding pane are for two different contexts. Drawer is supposed to only be for top level navigation, while the sliding pane is for master/detail layouts. The new Play Music user the new Navigation Drawer, but Hangouts uses the Sliding Pane. They give some good reasons why in the video.
