Spent the weekend road testing Earthwork's PianoMic (PM40)system. Having heard it earlier this year at NAMM - on Michael Spreeman's fabulous Ravenscroft piano - I was eager to try it out for myself on my Estonia l-190, in my own studio environment. Suffice to say that it is an amazing product and I am thrilled with the results. Check out the video for more!

Here's a brief video outlining some methods I use to reharmonize a tune. It is assumed that you are already familiar with jazz chord voicings, extensions/alterations & substitutions. If you want to check out this version you can download the lead sheet for the reharmonization at:

Pianos, pianos! Day 3 at NAMM was spent mostly on level 2 & 3 where the acoustic piano booths were located. Had a swell time playing on the Shigeru Kawai's (very responsive, beautiful touch, reminded me of a water-bed for fingers!) and a couple of Faziolis - so different from the others - the action was lighter, very airy and you could create smooth graded dynamics from a whisper to a crash with little or no effort! Anyway, it was around a year and a half ago, after much testing and hands on research, factoring in various requirements and constraints, that I decided to finally purchase the Estonia L190 (for those wanting to read the amplified version visit my post at: http://www.ramonaborthwick.com/blog/2010/11/estonia/). Naturally, it was great to encounter the Estonia booth and meeting Indrek Laul, the owner of Estonia pianos - he's a concert pianist (Juillard) as well. I've been to the NAMM show on two occasions prior to this one, and I just felt that this year, jazz pianists (most were killing!) far outnumbered classical pianists. Here's a pix of 4 pianists playing in tandem on the Shigeru Kawais - I was the 4th pianist, not in the picture :-)

At the PG Music booth with Peter Gannon, CEO-founder. (medical practioner, musician as well). Have been using Band-In-A-Box for over a couple of decades now - one of the best music accompaniment & teaching tools available.

Met the creator of Ravenscroft pianos, the affable Michael Spreeman - he custom creates pianos (acoustic grands in two sizes only), tailoring it to his clients' specifications. This one was priced at 235K - only a couple or so are produced a year in his factory in Scottscdale, AZ. Am looking forward to playing it, if I can get my hands on this piano - someone was always at the seat :-) The PianoMic system by Earthworks looked cool as well.

Good cheer and music at the Leitmotif holiday salon this past Friday with my adult students! No doubt, imbibing some hearty wine and ale made our performers more adventurous :-)
Skype students: we'll do a Hangout the next time so you can join us!

Lovely Saturday spent catching up with Esperanza! Enjoyed 're-harm-ed' standards by the trio (Esp, Geri Allen, Terri-Lyne) later that evening at Scullers.
