CATHY NEWMAN MUST MAKE A FULL PUBLIC APOLOGY AFTER CCTV DISPROVES HER WORDS

Published: Friday 6th February 2015 12:00

Mr Mohammed Shafiq, Chief Executive of the Ramadhan Foundation comments:

“Cathy Newman made some serious allegations that she was ‘ushered out’ of a Mosque in South London last Sunday. Following on from these tweets and public statements, the South London Islamic Centre received death threats and abuse through the telephone. A number of National newspapers ran the story, which fed an Islamaphobic narrative, which led to an atmosphere of hatred towards the Mosque and Muslims in general. This somehow proved that Muslims were sexist and Mosques were often limits for woman, which is so far from the truth. Cathy Newman is a public figure who has influence in the country and whether intentional or not her comments have given sucker to Muslim haters out there.

Now the CCTV footage on that day proves that she was not ushered or marched out of the Mosque as she claimed; she left alone and there was no pressure or aggression towards her. She has apologised to the Mosque for her ‘mistake’. The Ramadhan Foundation would like Cathy Newman to understand the Islamphobia that her comments and ‘mistaken’ memory have caused Muslims in the UK. We would kindly request a full public apology from Cathy Newman and are ready to sit down with her and Channel 4 News to ensure this does not happen again. The most serious concern has been the Islamaphobic threats directed at the Mosque, which have deeply worried the congregation and management committee.

British Muslims are open to wider society, we encourage Mosques to hold open days so people can learn more about Islam, but we also request that the media do not make up stories about our Mosques and faith, which are not true. In 24 hour news cycles these ‘mistakes’ can lead to threats against innocent Muslims. In the end we hope that Cathy Newman has learnt a valuable lesson, stick to the truth”

BIG INCREASE IN RELIGIOUS SLAUGHTER OF ANIMALS

Published: Friday 30th January 2015 11:00

Mr Mohammed Shafiq, Chief Executive of the Ramadhan Foundation comments:

In reality, the furore in some quarters over religious slaughter of animals is an excuse to lash out and demonise Muslims. A day does not pass by without a halal meat related story in the media. As Muslims, we join the Jewish community in saying that we take animal welfare seriously and have a tradition going back centuries, which kills animals in a humane way. If opponents of slaughter of animals are so concerned maybe they should consider becoming vegetarians.

There is a difference of opinion within the Muslim community about stunning and none stunning, we cater for both these views within our community. What I would obviously say is we should have clear labelling of Kosher and Halal meat so people know what they are buying. Apart from the anti Muslim brigade who will use any excuse to bash our community, most decent people accept religious slaughter and indeed will have no time for these haters.

As I’ve said if our opponents are supposedly so concerned about animal welfare, maybe it is time to become a vegetarian.

ERIC PICKLES PATRONISING LETTER TO MUSLIMS

Published: Monday 19th January 2015 11:00

Mr. Mohammed Shafiq, Chief Executive of the Ramadhan Foundation comments:

"“I wish to express my dismay at the letter sent by the Communities Secretary Eric Pickles MP, this letter is patronising and factually incorrect and typical of the Government only looking at Muslims through the prism of terrorism and security.

For the record Muslim leaders, Imams and organisations have been engaged in work to expose the terrorist ideology and promote the Islamic teachings against terrorism since 9/11. We do not need to be patronised by a Government that claims it wants to give young Muslims an alternative to the extremist narrative and then refuse to discuss foreign policy.

Last Friday in their sermons over 1000, Imams spoke against the Paris Attacks and Islam’s teaching against terrorism, there have been no allegations of Mosques promoting extremism in recent years and I think this is an indication of the work Mosques have done to eradicate any possible threat from extremists. Everything the Ministers asks us to do we are doing already, so why the need for such a patronising letter, in reality it makes Muslims feel whatever we do it will never be enough for some.

In terms of British values, is Mr Pickles really suggesting as the far right do that Muslims are detached from mainstream society? I hope the Minister clarifies his comments.

We do not a patronising letter from Ministers to tell us to campaign against terrorism, promote values and do more against extremism when all the evidence points to Muslims organisations doing just that. If Mr Pickles and the Government want to work in partnership with the Muslim community then this is certainly not the way to do that.

Muslims are an integral part of British society, we have so much to celebrate yet we still have Muslims seen from one angle and that is security and terrorism. This must change."

CHARLIE HEBDO CARTOONS DEPICTING PROPHET MUHAMMAD PBUH CONDEMNED

Published: Tuesday 13th January 2015 13:00

Mr. Mohammed Shafiq, Chief Executive of the Ramadhan Foundation comments:

"The Ramadhan Foundation condemns the republication of the Charlie Hebdo cartoons as they offend millions of Muslims around the world.

Muslims around were disgusted and have condemned the terrorism in Paris and once again there is no place for violence or terrorism.
Freedom of speech allows these cartoons to be published and we equally have the right to challenge the publications through peaceful methods.

Muslims scholars are willing to debate Islam but this must be based on evidence and in an environment of tolerance not hatred.
The days ahead will be difficult but we urge all who oppose these cartoons to do so in a peaceful manner.

Finally attacks against the Jewish community is strongly condemned. We stand together against this violence and the deliberate attempt to divide communities by terrorists. In this they will fail.
