Cranes prefer wetlands and marshes as their breeding grounds, but you can often see them feeding in the pastures or corn fields. Their main diet consists of berries, small mammals, insects, snails, reptiles, amphibians and grains such as corn or wheat.

Excellent clarity and detail!  Thanks for the information about the bird, too. I enjoy reading about and learning more about the birds in the image. +Rafał Nowak

Local cranes are one of my favourite birds to photograph. They are very tame, and it's almost guaranteed, that if you are patient, you will go home with many great shots. There's not much more you could ask for.

Here's some more shots from LaSalle Park in Burlington, Ontario. Every winter we have nice variety of waterfowl here including such a treasure as adult male King Eider, which I missed on April 1st.

Sandhill Cranes are one of my favourite subjects to photograph. They are large and very tame, even with their chicks around!

The Sandhill Crane's large wingspan, typically 1.65 to 2.1 m (5.4 to 6.9 ft), makes this a very skilled soaring bird similar in style to hawks and eagles. Utilizing thermals to obtain lift, they can stay aloft for many hours, requiring only occasional flapping of their wings and consequently expending little energy.

Last year, I went over to see those magnificent birds couple of times without luck. It was really disappointing, since I had great shots with chicks in previous years. I have to blame Enbridge and their work on the oil pipe line 9 in the area. Fortunately, their work is done, and Sandhill cranes are back. Not one pair, but two! I'm looking forward to great opportunities it might bring later in the season.

The Horned Grebe is an excellent swimmer and diver. I enjoy photographing these little birds, and I always wait with anticipation trying to guess where it will resurface after it dives to find a fish underwater.

Story

Nature lover and amateur photographer based in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
Introduction
I'm Hamilton, Ontario based nature lover and self thought photographer.

Photography has been my passion for as long as I can remember. I got my first camera in early elementary school years. Back then I was developing black and white films in my dads dark room.

My main topics are wildlife and landscapes, but that does not stop me from experimenting with other subjects.
