Jordan Kasteler

Tribute to Jordan Kasteler
We are all devastated by the loss of our family member and friend Jordan Kasteler on July 21, 2018. Anyone who had the privilege of meeting Jordan knew what a big heart he had. He loved deeply and was always thinking of others. He was vibrant and full of love, making sure the people around him were happy and having a good time. He put his heart and soul into everything he did with a fierce loyalty and a spirit of justice. If you were his friend, you knew he was in your corner rooting for you no matter what. Whether it was his dedication to family and friends, his work or his activism, he always did everything at 100%.
The technology world also lost one of its shining stars, as Jordan had established himself as one of the most influential leaders in the digital marketing and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) community. He was born November 29, 1982, and his passion for technology began early in his life. His memory from elementary school describes it best, “When Papa surprised me with my first real computer, it was like Christmas morning and was the catalyst for my love of technology.”
He was hired fresh out of high school by a national advertising agency to help their clients usher in the age of SEO. Jordan spent the next 18 years becoming an integral part of the Search Engine Marketing (SEM) community and a driving force in bringing innovations to the field. During those 18 years, Jordan graduated Magna Cum Laude with his BA in Digital Media from Utah Valley University and later completed his Masters of Professional Communication, Multimedia Design from Westminster College. In addition to his traditional education, he spent hours many evenings reading about SEM related topics to stay on the leading edge of the industry when the field required an innovative and exploratory approach to new challenges.
During his career, Jordan founded several tech companies, authored a book “A to Z, Social Media Marketing,” was frequently interviewed by the media and had countless articles in publications including Forbes magazine, Inc.com, Huffington Post, and many more. He was a dearly loved speaker at industry conferences around the world and was frequently quoted by authors and industry experts. Jordan received numerous awards and honors including the first “Best Social Content Media Guru” award, the “Top 25 SEO Blogs to Follow” award, and Google Analytics and AdWords qualifications.
Jordan’s contagious smile and laugh will be missed by colleagues around the world and was a natural extension of his genuine love for humanity, and his ability to connect with people from all walks of life. As described by a colleague, “He was charming, friendly, warm and loving and he was, more importantly, consistent in being that way to everyone he met.” The sincerity of his interactions, his generous sharing of time and knowledge, his passion for his career and his fun-loving personality resulted in hundreds of close friends in the SEM community. His management style reflected that same approach as described by a former employee, “His natural ability to guide others, coupled with the humility that made it seem like the others were self-directing, is truly remarkable.” Jordan was always independent, yet he was a loyal friend to former clients, employers, and even competitors.
His success in the industry came from combining one of the brightest minds in the industry with a truly caring soul that allowed him to translate his understanding of people into a successful SEM strategy. In a colleague’s words, “Jordan provides a rare combination of industry thought leadership and strong tactical execution in SEO. Most SEOs only manage to achieve one or the other, but Jordan takes his craft very seriously and puts that passion into all of his work.”
Jordan was an exceptional son, brother, grandson, nephew, and uncle, and brought fun, excitement and mischief to his home growing up and to family get-togethers. He planned elaborate pranks and enjoyed sharing inside jokes across the table with a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his lips. His quirky sense of humor was driven by an exceptionally quick wit and ability to find humor in everyday interactions bringing laughter everywhere he went.
Of all the roles that Jordan had, his favorite was that of husband and father. He prepared for his role as a husband by acquiring a formal education and carefully managing his money with a focus on financial security. When he met Heather, they worked to accomplish their goals together and were married on August 16, 2008. During the early years of their marriage, they enjoyed traveling together and visited Europe, Hawaii, Cancun, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Costa Rica. Jordan’s favorite place to visit was San Diego where he enjoyed the beach, the laid-back culture, and the food. When at home, he loved to watch movies, eat treats and cuddle with Heather. He was a supportive partner who was tender and kind, keeping his family as first priority. He always surprised her on the anniversary of the day they made their relationship exclusive by doing something extra thoughtful to celebrate. Heather considered Jordan the love of her life and her feelings can’t be captured in words.
Jordan and Heather welcomed Jax into their lives in 2015, adding the role of father to his life. Jordan was a fun dad, and always loved rough-housing with his son. Jax is already skilled on his scooter — even at 3 — and Jordan was anxiously looking forward to teaching him how to skateboard. Jordan was an active participant in Jax’s bedtime routine and enjoyed bouncing him on the bed to make him laugh. They would then calm him down with a story and tuck him in. Jordan loved Heather and Jax and would do anything for them.
In addition to his love for humanity, he was passionate about animal rights and loved the time when he worked for PETA. Jordan was an inspiration to countless activists across the country that had the opportunity to volunteer with him. He was a sensitive man with iron convictions and a persistent defender of the animal kingdom. He staged protests wherever he thought animals were cruelly treated but projected a warm and inviting tone, eager to educate people and help advocate for change. He was an unyielding vegan and environmentalist and was persistent in his advocacy for those causes. He was courageous in making a stand and was never deterred by weather or convenience and would protest alone if necessary.
Jordan leaves behind his beautiful wife Heather and precious son Jax, his family, and hundreds of friends. His final wish is to be remembered at Rosecrest Elementary School where he spent many happy days skateboarding with his friends. The memorial will take place Thursday, August 16th from 7-9 p.m. at the field behind Rosecrest, 2420 Fisher Lane, Salt Lake City, Utah 84109. The memorial is a casual dress. Bring your own skateboard.
