"This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe." Fantastic.
In an announcement made on ABC's The View this morning, Thor, Marvel's God of Thunder, will be a woman in the comics. The news is a major shift in Marvel's continuity, since Thor is one of the...

Join our lab! :D

Seems fitting to post here: 2 two-year post-docs on animal coloration available in my lab group. Feel free to contact me directly.
A post-doctoral position in mechanisms and/or evolution of animal coloration is available in the Shawkey lab at the University of Akron in Ohio, USA. We are examining how pigments and organization of tissue at the nanostructural scale in feathers and eggs contributes to their optical (coloration ...

After all the ENCODE hype and banter, here we go: new studies shows completely randomly generated sequences of DNA show "some biochemical activity", and would thus be considered "functional". We need appropriate null hypotheses to answer this question.
Last September, there was a wee bit of a media frenzy over the Phase 2 ENCODE publications. The big story was supposed to be that ‘junk DNA is debunked’ - ENCODE had allegedly shown that instead of...

Awesome new paper - and #OA
Abstract Sexual selection is proposed to be an important driver of diversification in animal systems, yet previous tests of this hypothesis have produced mixed results and the mechanisms involved remain unclear. Here, we use a novel phylogenetic approach to assess the influence of sexual selection on patterns of evolutionary change during 84 recent speciation events across 23 passerine bird families. We show that elevated levels of sexual selecti...

Didn't know that gitHub offered free micro accounts to students (and postdocs)! Awesome!

YES! great to see the idea that we have to move beyond the "strength of selection" when understanding diversification by sexual selection!
