I just bougth a netbook for my kids, an Acer Aspire One D257. It comes preinstalled with Meego a Linux distro ( it seems to be cool for kids but too basic for me ). I just decided to install #ubuntu.
First I tried to install Ubuntu creating a bootable USB key from my Mac, after several tries I gave up. The instructions in the Ubuntu Home page are intended to install Ubuntu on a Mac, not to create an installer from a Mac
Then I moved to a Windows XP net and after just 5 minutes I was able to create my USB bootable Key. To create a USB bootable drive I used http://goo.gl/hOkRf
. The only thing you need to do before is just to download the Ubuntu ISO image and get a 2 GB free USB Stick then perform the three simple steps provided by the Universal USB Installer and in few minutes you will have your USB bootable drive.
The installation process from the USB is very straightforward, you need to enter to the setup of your Netbook and enable it to be able of booting from a USB drive, then restart and follow the Ubuntu installation process.
After the installation process everything worked perfect, including the wireless card and the built-in camera. I already installed #Chrome and Skype, and I even tried Angry Birds the Chrome version ( slow but worked).
Ubuntu is very complete and works well in ths kind of netbooks, it also coms with a version of Open Office and other cool stuf is available from https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/
If you want to try something cool, give #Ubuntu a chance.
