Beyond the Dams to Berlin

Following on from the Dams Raid on 16/17 May 1943, 617 & 9 Squadron became the elite unit in the Royal Air Force tasked with bombing the enemy with the newly developed Tallboy & Grand Slam bombs.
Continuing its association with the Petwood Hotel, you have the unique opportunity to hear talks by two members of 617 Squadron detailing their individual recollections of flying from RAF Woodhall Spa.
Squadron Leader Benny Goodman will recall his full tour of 30 operations as a pilot including participation in sinking of the German battleship Tirpitz, bombing the E-Boat pens at Ijmuiden along with the Bielefeld Viaduct and, the last operation of WWII against Hitler's mountain retreat at Berchtesgaden.
Joining Benny will be Wing Commander John Bell who will talk on his experiences of completing 50 operations from RAF Woodhall Spa with both 619 and 617 Squadrons. John was the bomb aimer on Bob Knight's crew and participated in many specialised operations with the Tallboy bomb including the V2 sites at Watten and Wizernes and U-boat pens at Brest.
John and Benny will be signing in the afternoon along with the following veterans from both 617 and other squadrons who flew operations over Germany with Bomber Command :
• Sqn Ldr Geoffrey Whittle DFC, 101 Sqn.
• Flt Sgt Sydney Marshall, 103 Sqn.
• W/O Taff Owen, 153 & 12 Sqn.
• Flt Sgt Harry Parkins, 630 & 576 Sqn.
• W/O Reg Spencer, 514 & 617 Sqn.
