If you are in the Seattle area come join me on May 2nd to celebrate Beltane! We'll be doing a fun, informal ritual in the always lovely Carkeek Park. We'll be meeting in the parking area next to the playground at 3pm. This relaxed and informal ritual is o...
"Witchcraft is not neoPagan goddess worship, it is not secular weather worship, it is not tree-hugging, and it is not New Age fuckery. Witchcraft is not safe. Witchcraft is not good and kind. Witchcraft is the domain of the trickster, the outcast, the wanderer, and the crooked. It belongs to those who know every light casts a shadow; who have looked into the depths of darkness in their soul and accepted what they’ve seen along with all that is good. Witchcraft requires cunning, manipulation, self-awareness, adaptable morals, and dash of madness. Witchcraft is sharp pins pierced into a waxen image of an enemy, a lover’s hair plaited with one’s own, a Saturnine root harvested at midnight, blood spilled for hungry spirits, magical pacts made with daemons, a handful of dried henbane leaves burned and inhaled to talk to shades, an ancient incantation sung to become a wild hare, and witchcraft is sabbat wine imbibed while dancing wildly, intoxicated in the woods on Walpurgisnacht."
This reminds me of some folk I knew a few years back who knew a lot about magick, could talk and write and quote about it, they just didn't seem to actually be doing much of it themselves. I think some people would really rather just watch others do magick and not actually do any. I have a few friends who love "real" magick until it genuinely happens and then it freaks them out.
As I meditate on this latest piece from Sarah, I realize I need magickal community that offers more diversity and which actively strives towards the inclusive of a broader spectrum of energetic ways of being than the communities with which I am currently involved.
"We should not confuse having healthy boundaries with the shedding process that is often used to eliminate people who we assume are not suited for our covens and groves. Instead of eliminating people based in perception, we should consider how we are able to encourage, inspire and uplift others in our community. And we need to stop assuming that when someone goes away it is because they were not meant to be here. It is in that same thread of thought, whether conscious or unconscious, that we see a lack of diversity within the Pagan community yet cannot understand why. It is this same stream of behavior that creates a culture of acceptable sameness and rejects those things that are outside of the realm of our comfort; we actively and passively are pushing away people that do not fit and often forget to evaluate the impact. It is within that same cultural norm that we lack accountability for the roles that we play and the outcomes that are generated as a result."
