"Progress is a religion, not a technology, a belief that what is now is better than what was before, that as-we-are is greater than as-we-were, a faith in a future unseen and a hatred of the sins of our Pagan ancestors. Before we were stupid and poor, violent and sickly until Progress came with its saving grace. Before we toiled and slaved in darkness, revering unseen spirits, chanting praises to idols and dancing ignorant dances in the meadows of The Commons; now we’ve got video games and factories and fast-food, praise be forever to the Holy Name of Progress."

I've changed up my regular Beltane magick to be more aware of the events taking place in Baltimore and around the US.
I've been celebrating Beltane for...a good long while now and this year has, by far, the most tumultuous energy I've ever felt on May Day. With everything that's going on in the world it seems appropriate to turn the traditional blessings of fertility and personal prosperity into blessings for ...

In this 38-minute talk called Fly on the Wings of the Storm, Peter Grey of Scarlet Imprint and author of Apocalyptic Witchcraft urges his fellow witches to awaken to the historic “battlefield” and current state of That Old-Time Religion. Drawing a parallel between the current ethics and practices of global war, endless urbanization, the surveillance state, and planetary climate catastrophe with the religion’s historically near-ubiquitous persecution, Grey urges witches to suspend their differences and begin including a more politically-conscious dimension to their religion. Grey is not shy in his language, “Apocalyptic Witchcraft is about a world at war [over] the last remnants of wild nature.”

I get what Greer means when he says Retro Future. I sewed the new kitchen curtains from a $2 scrap of fabric from the thrift store on my grandmother's 1943 Singer Featherweight.
Is it just me, or has the United States taken yet another great leap forward into the surreal over the last few days? Glancing through the news, I find another round of articles babbling about how fracking has guaranteed Amer...

It's pieces like this one from John Michael Greer that ease me in working to understand the growing schism between myself and my greater magickal community. I recognize the distracted denial Greer talks about in some of how I went to events. The metaphor that came to mind this week was that as much as I can feed and be fed by the community, I do not feel nourished by our interactions. And it would seem I'm not denying that anymore.
It occurred to me the other day that quite a few of the odder features of contemporary American culture make perfect sense if you assume that everybody knows exactly what’s wrong and what’s coming as our society rushes, pedal...

The job I've had for most of the last decade didn't exist before then, and it's being reabsorbed by the same internet that birthed it. What would you do if your current internet access went away? Or slowly kept getting more costly?
The mythic role assigned to progress in today’s popular culture has any number of odd effects, but one of the strangest is the blindness to the downside that clamps down on the collective imagination of our time once people b...

I love this part and am glad it's much too long for a t-shirt,

"Witchcraft is not neoPagan goddess worship, it is not secular weather worship, it is not tree-hugging, and it is not New Age fuckery. Witchcraft is not safe. Witchcraft is not good and kind. Witchcraft is the domain of the trickster, the outcast, the wanderer, and the crooked. It belongs to those who know every light casts a shadow; who have looked into the depths of darkness in their soul and accepted what they’ve seen along with all that is good. Witchcraft requires cunning, manipulation, self-awareness, adaptable morals, and dash of madness. Witchcraft is sharp pins pierced into a waxen image of an enemy, a lover’s hair plaited with one’s own, a Saturnine root harvested at midnight, blood spilled for hungry spirits, magical pacts made with daemons, a handful of dried henbane leaves burned and inhaled to talk to shades, an ancient incantation sung to become a wild hare, and witchcraft is sabbat wine imbibed while dancing wildly, intoxicated in the woods on Walpurgisnacht."

This reminds me of some folk I knew a few years back who knew a lot about magick, could talk and write and quote about it, they just didn't seem to actually be doing much of it themselves. I think some people would really rather just watch others do magick and not actually do any. I have a few friends who love "real" magick until it genuinely happens and then it freaks them out.

As I meditate on this latest piece from Sarah, I realize I need magickal community that offers more diversity and which actively strives towards the inclusive of a broader spectrum of energetic ways of being than the communities with which I am currently involved.
“Up on their brooms the Witches stream, Crooked and black in the crescent's gleam; One foot high, and one foot low, Bearded, cloaked, and cowled, they go.” - Walter de la Mare. T he metaphorical witch's broomstick is forgotten in the back of an old closet, covered in cobwebs and shrouded in ...

This is the paragraph that really struck me. No community I have ever been a part of has not functioned as described, Pagan or otherwise. I know some people who are in groups that are attempting to shift this paradigm and I look forward to watcing how they take on the challenges.

"We should not confuse having healthy boundaries with the shedding process that is often used to eliminate people who we assume are not suited for our covens and groves. Instead of eliminating people based in perception, we should consider how we are able to encourage, inspire and uplift others in our community. And we need to stop assuming that when someone goes away it is because they were not meant to be here. It is in that same thread of thought, whether conscious or unconscious, that we see a lack of diversity within the Pagan community yet cannot understand why. It is this same stream of behavior that creates a culture of acceptable sameness and rejects those things that are outside of the realm of our comfort; we actively and passively are pushing away people that do not fit and often forget to evaluate the impact. It is within that same cultural norm that we lack accountability for the roles that we play and the outcomes that are generated as a result."

From Crystal Blanton: We as a society have pushed against the views of Eugenics and other popular theories that fall under the umbrella of Social Darwinism, but we often dismiss how these types of...

Some of the pictures I took at the Star Wars costume exhibit currently showing at the EMP have been popular over on Tumblr.  The velvet robes of Amidala and her handmaidens are some of my favorites from the series and it seems I'm not the only one who thinks so.
