Spending the winter in Las Vegas, it makes me love how Seattle is working to handle their waste even more.  That poet in Ballard wasn't far off when he described it here as a wasteland.  They waste a LOT in Vegas.

We're taking the "watching the grass grow" thing seriously at my house this summer.
If you are looking for an easy and fun way to lessen your yard work, add some color, ease up on watering and all that good stuff, have you ever considered just hosting a big patch of nature instead of making something complicated? That's what sort of happened at my house, and the end result is that when people ask us what is up with our backyard, we tell them we're growing a meadow. So far, there hasn't been a single person who hasn't found that ...

My lens on envisioning a tiny house not only got picked as one of the best, but I won the copy of Dee Williams' book! Not all Mondays start out like this....
Getting from the idea of a tiny house to the actuality of a tiny house is the tricky part. It's probably even trickier than the genuine construction process part. And for a lot of people, learning to scale down and live smaller takes a lot longer to master than it takes to build a tiny trailer house too. I've been contemplating tiny house-dom and doing a lot of reading. But it's never the same as having some sort of actual, real-life experience. ...

I wish there had been ANYONE around me who had a viewpoint like this when i was growing up.
A young woman asked me how to deal with bullies, and I told her how to embrace being a nerd while having compassion for the bully.

If you've ever known anyone addicted to anything, you owe it to yourself and them to read this piece.
New evidence about addiction isn't just a challenge to us politically. It doesn't just force us to change our minds. It forces us to change our hearts....

If you would support net neutrality (where the Internet is equal access/speed for everyone) please let your Congress member know NOW!
Title X is the fake cable bill that Comcast wants Congress to create to give the cable industry the power to restrict the open Internet to force Internet users to pay more fees. Please share.

I know, Fannie, it's hard to believe that we just brought you home and you have to watch me pack. There's some debate that what we now have in the house is a "chiweenie."

This was a haunting, beautiful film; a strange cross-pollination that includes David Lynch and Bowie's Man Who Fell To Earth as fairy grandfathers. You'll never see Scarlett Johansson in anything like this again.
Director Jonathan Glazer talks about how the film – which stars Scarlett Johansson as an alien driving round Glasgow in a van – came to obsess him

While I was at the Emerald City Comicon, my Squidoo lens on Cultivating Saffron was awarded Lens of the Day!  I discovered this in my email inbox and then spent the next six hours helping train and certify kids as real superheros in the con area created for them.
When I happen to mention that I'm growing my own saffron, most people are really surprised. There's something about the idea of spices that automatically transmits mental images of faraway places and really hot climates. Or something like that. However it is a very real fact that in the Pacific Northwest of the USA it is completely possible to grow saffron. Yep, that saffron: the most expensive spice in the whole world. As a hobby gardener, it's ...

I went on the Great Wheel in July 2012 with a friend. As locals, we enjoyed the view and experience, but what was fun was that we had three tourists in our car with us.
