Have you ever felt like maybe your Facebook friends were suffering from insecurity, narcissism, or both? You may have been right, as a new study finds self-esteem issues and narcissistic tendencies correlate with frequency and style of Facebook posting.
Insecure users of the social network post more Relationship Status updates, seemingly seeking out the approval and reassurance of the crowd about their relationships, little knowing that the crowd doesn't like it.
Narcissists, meanwhile, are more likely to seek recognition by boasting about their accomplishments, or their fitness habits, equally unaware that their 'Friends' may be just being polite to Like their updates.
From a non-clinical marketing perspective these insights suggest a strong role for personality in how people use social networks, as well likely as which networks they use. The difference between a Facebook user and a Twitter user may be more than just a preference for Friends versus Interests.
