In Vietnamese cities, high population densities, narrow streets, and a tradition of shopping locally have made motorbikes the preferred way to transport just about anything. Photographer Hans Kemp arrived in the country in 1991 just before Tet, the Vietnamese New Year, and was immediately overwhelmed by the rushing crowds preparing...

Read this. It's happy and lovely and will make your day better.
In the mid ’80s, I was living in Santa Fe, N.M., making a shabby living writing magazine articles, when a peculiar assignment came my way. I had become friendly with a group of Tibetan exiles who lived in a compound on Canyon Road, where they ran a business selling Tibetan...

Interesting read on the internet, news consumption and looking ahead to a world that has tired of "the stream"
The Stream is fun and fast, but don't you miss the sense of an ending?

"GoldieBlox. What should we make of you? Neither evil nor anti-feminist nor effective at accomplishing your stated aims nor, perhaps, especially fun to play with. So, basically, a company selling stuff. But still, great video"

As I noted earlier, awesome ad, great sentiment, but the toy itself is nothing more than a pink version of Tinker Toys.
It seems like forever ago—way more than one week—that we stumbled on an adorable marketing video for a startup toy company called GoldieBlox and posted it to our blog. The ad introduced three supremely cute girls bored beyond belief by princess culture. As a feminist re-write of a Beastie Boys tune thumped...

For the second year the EagleCam project features a live feed of a Bald Eagle nest in the Twin cities metro area. It is a great opportunity to see Minnesota’s thriving wildlife up-close without a trek through the ice and snow.

These real life ruins offer an eerie glimpse into a world without humans. Their dark walls inspire a sense of wonder like I've never felt before.

I used to watch the cranes unloading container ships at the port of Tacoma and imagine the long journeys of all the "stuff" in those containers -- where it came from & where it was going.

The folks over at +Planet Money -- the source of my favorite podcast & many Weeks family dinner conversations -- have just wrapped up an awesome series, "From Seed to Shirt" in which they followed the making of a t-shirt from the cotton field to our closets.

Here, they have presented the whole story through text and video. It's beautifully presented and well worth a look.
The world behind a simple shirt, in five chapters.
