Have you ever wondered what Jane Austen's contemporaries thought of her work? My new post looks at the connections between popular Regency novelist Maria Edgeworth and Jane Austen and what they thought of each other's work.

I thought it was interesting that Maria clearly had a policy of not basing her characters completely on a single person. However, she clearly used bits and pieces of reality that are unusual. In Belinda, Mr Harvey is bringing up a simple girl, living away from the world, to be his wife. While researching more about Maria for my book on Regency women, I have just discovered that one of her father's friends attempted to do just that!
