So I was literally in the process of googling how to fasten a saw to a broom handle securely, so that I can cut a giant seed pod off a palm tree in the garden before it makes a huge mess, when I was interrupted by a knock at the door. It was a Samoan with a chainsaw who was "in the neighbourhood" and wanted to know if I needed my palm tree trimmed.

Google is getting spookier by the day, but I'm about 80% sure their AI isn't that good yet.

(Also, AAA Tree Services is really good, pretty cheap, and they can climb a two storey palm tree in 10 seconds flat in 36 degree temperatures while carrying a chainsaw. Highly recommended.)

That doesn't sound entirely safe, but super efficient and convenient

I know i tend to be more night-owlish than the average bear, but is 7:00am actually not an antisocial time to be mowing your lawn? Our neighbour has done it twice now.

And this morning when I opened the window to try to negotiate a later start time, not only could he not hear me, but he was actually mowing my lawn too, so I felt I couldn't really complain.

I think it is objectively acceptable behaviour in the suburbs for a Saturday morning. On no other day of the week. (And not necessarily subjectively acceptable!)

Does anyone know what these are? They are growing in my garden, about the size of the palm of my hand (so far). Am hoping they are something delicious, but suspect just boring seed pods of some sort.

Coincidentally there is an article in the Blenheim Sun (NZ) about the need to get rid of this plant and report it whenever you see it in the wild. Over here the council will get rid of it from your property as it is categorised as a "total control plant pest".

#RHoKparramatta is coming to a close. 48 hours of programming, discussion, debate, playing pool, eating bacon, and solving humanity's problems. And coffee. So much coffee.

We have working apps, working websites, and lots of great ideas for taking things further. Thanks everyone!

My Nexus 4 homescreen, using Apex Launcher, Minimalistic Text, and Simple Text widgets. The words along the top and bottom are either apps or folders, and the list in the top left is drawn from my Google Calendar (pink for available classes at my gym, yellow for reminders). The wallpaper changes automatically depending on time of day, location and weather (thanks to Tasker). This wallpaper is for rainy afternoons at work.

This came with our new washing machine. It's about 30cm long. I am scared of throwing it out in case it turns out to be important, but that "do not use" instruction is also a bit baffling.

Is this the new washing machine that you got pressured into getting for free?

My in-laws garden makes me feel simultaneously inspired and very, very tired. It is mostly designed along the principle of annexing as much land that doesn't belong to them as possible, and planting protected natives on it so that the council can't make them remove them again.

The Random Hacks of Kindness Parramatta (actually at Werrington) had a very successful first day!

Our Barista Mentor app has a working quiz and video; Empower Parramatta has figured out why everyone in Parramatta isn't using solar power yet; and Kolorob has routed some sample journeys through the slums of Dhaka using the Google directions API and Graphhopper #rhokparramatta

No, it was because the picture was taken under the coffee table. The "black" is actually the couch, which is red, but in shadow.
