In observance of the 15th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, and in remembrance of those who lost their lives and those whose lives were forever changed, all RWJBarnabas Health facilities will hold a moment of silence at 9:15 a.m., today Sunday, September 11.

For those of us who are elsewhere on Sunday, let us hold our own moment of remembrance to honor the nearly 3,000 people who died in the terror attacks and the countless others – first responders and everyday people – who risked their lives to help one another.

#Zika can be spread from a pregnant woman to her unborn baby. Pregnant women in any trimester should consider postponing travel to areas where Zika virus is spreading. Pregnant women who do travel to one of these areas should talk to their doctor first and strictly follow steps to avoid mosquito bites during the trip. Women whose partner has traveled to an area where Zika is present should abstain from sex, or correctly and consistently use condoms for all sex acts, throughout the remainder of the pregnancy.

‪#‎Zika‬ is a viral infection that is primarily spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. Zika virus can also spread when an infected man has sex with his partners. In May 2015, Brazil reported the first outbreak of Zika in the Americas. Zika virus infection during pregnancy is a cause of a serious birth defect of the brain called microcephaly and other severe brain defects. Zika is now present in many countries and territories.
About one in five people develop symptoms and infection is usually mild. The most common symptoms are fever, rash, joint pain or red eyes. Other common symptoms include muscle pain and headache. Symptoms usually begin 2-7 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito and last several days to a week. No vaccine or preventive drug is available at this time.
To learn more about the Zika virus and how to prevent infection, download the New Jersey Department of Health Zika FAQ guide at http://ow.ly/huKt3010Wgs.
