There is difference between #motivation (i.e. having goals you want to chase) vs #commitment (i.e. applying yourself to a system that will get you where you want to be). Setting #goals in life is great, but we can easily overlook how we get there. This is where focusing on the system can help more. Goals are good for planning your progress, where your martial arts system is where you make progress. Read on - http://bit.ly/QMAYGYS

How often do we feel that we are in our own little world? We can get so focused on ourselves, we forget how our attitudes and behaviours can affect others. A bad attitude can have a negative feel for everybody around. Conversely, a good attitude can have a lasting impact on yours and others lives.

In #martialarts, we learn to approach matters with calmness and awareness, as that will help you with the right response to situations. Use this same teaching to #chooseyourattitude each day. Each morning, breathe, relax and make a conscious effort to choose your state for that day. When you combine a good attitude with other tenets such as service to others, it makes life worth living. You make other people’s day. You feel good about yourself. You have #fun. You become a good example to your family, friends and all around you.

#generosity can mean many things to many people, whether it is not thinking only of oneself, or giving without expecting in return. In today's busy world, it is easy to fall into the trap of focusing your energies on yourself, rather than the interests of everyone. We all know we should be kind to those around us, so make an effort to do so.

The best thing is that generosity can be really simple. Say hello to others...do a chore without being asked that can help a family member...hold the door open...invite a friend over for lunch...pick up rubbish...call a family member you have not seen in a while...listen to a differing point of view with an open mind...donate money or time to a worthwhile charity...the list could go on and on.

Remember, an act of generosity can simultaneously touch three people: the giver, the recipient and any other observer. This is three lives changed for the better with simple acts of generosity. As Adam Smith noted in The Theory of Moral Sentiments: “People naturally desire not only to be loved, but to be lovely”. Don’t just have a lovely week, but be lovely this week.

#leadership is an important part of your martial arts development. Each and every one of you have great qualities that can be shared with others. Therefore, each and every one of you have the ability to lead in your own way.

A good leader acts with honesty and integrity. They speak the truth and, by doing so, earns trust. They are of good character. They have a giving spirit and show courtesy to everyone. These are qualities that allow others to respect you. Respect is a vital attribute for all leaders.

A good leader also "walks their talk". They do what they say they are going to do, which further builds trust. When others view you to be trustworthy, you have earned the right to have responsibility for others.

#martialarts training helps develop leadership. The further you grade, the more you learn, which then allows you to help others. When you help, you are directly taking on the qualities of leadership. This is why "service" is a vital part of our system. The service helps all of the students develop leadership qualities. This will help "Build a Better You!"

Are you a #BlackBelt in all areas of your life, not just in the dojo? You should expect #excellence at everything you do. You should also have #discipline in everything you do. However, this is also largely dependent on your #attitude and mindset. We provide some tips in the following article. http://bit.ly/2aXmxgx

The #BlackBelt represents a symbol of #excellence. When we train you, we use the symbol of a Black Belt to help you strive to be better. A Black Belt is simply a white belt who never gave up and worked hard at achieving their goals.

However, we do not just want you to be Black Belts in the dojo, but also Black Belts at life. Be the best person you can be. You will not be perfect, but try your best to be.

At the end of the day, Black Belt is not about the colour of the belt, but more the #mindset. If you have the right mindset...or #attitude...you can achieve anything in life. And that is we want for you and your child.

#martialarts is more than just physical training and #fitness. It must encompass the complete mind-body-spirit. A good way to reflect on this is through meditation.

#meditation is not sitting on a mountain top and chanting (although, feel free to do that if it makes you feel better). Meditation is simply "concentrated focus', whether it is on breathing, movement or attention to something. Take time each day to take some deep breaths, or close your eyes and really listen to the sounds, or do some slow pre-meditated movements (such as your Multiple Defence).

Meditation helps develop your 'inner awareness'. Inner awareness creates a gap between thoughts and actions. Meditation helps you observe yourself and your actions. When you slow down your thoughts, it removes impulsiveness and provides you with more choices. When you see your choices, it can help you make the right choice with your actions. This is good.

Meditation has many benefits, all which help enhance your personal and spiritual growth. And isn't that what martial arts is all about, i.e. enhancing your personal growth?

You cannot change either the past or the future. But you can control the present moment, which is living is done. Any action (in the present moment) towards your #goals is often better than no action, particularly if you are not achieving the things that are really important to you. If you do the right action, that is terrific. Even if you do a wrong action or make a mistake, you have learned something, and you can change it next time to progress. If you do nothing, you learn nothing.

It is the same with #martialarts. I used to really stress about #sparring or gradings before each session. What if I get embarrassed? What if I get injured? Even though I had never been seriously injured in sparring before, or failed a grading, the thought of sparring always used to worry me. I was living n the future and worrying about things that may not happen. It was affecting my present moment. It took a lot of training before I started to accept that I cannot really control the many variables, particularly future potential variables. Instead, I learned to embrace the present moment, get in there and enjoy the experience. And my martial arts greatly improved as a result.

If you can learn to embrace the present moment in the dojo, you can certainly do it with other areas of your life. As #EckhartTolle said in his great book, The Power Of Now, “It is not uncommon for people to spend their whole life waiting to start living”. That is because people are not living in the here and now. Do not be one of those people who never live their lives. Decide what is really important to you, constantly focus the present moment, and start embracing the “here and now".

One of the main reasons people start #martialarts is for #discipline. Discipline / self-discipline helps you reach your #goals, develop a real work ethic, while also helping with your #selfconfidence.

However, martial arts alone does not automatically mean you become disciplined. It is how you approach your martial arts training that is important. Do you show up to class on time? Do you listen and fully participate in class? Do you set yourself achievable goals to work towards (say the next grading)? Do you work on your weakness and not just your strengths? Do you seek help from others to help work on those weaknesses? Do you provide service to others? This is how a disciplined martial artist is measured, rather than by how high you can kick.

Discipline does not just apply to your martial arts. Do you take the positive behaviours from your martial arts training and apply them to other areas of your life? Do you purposely make time to spend with family and friends? Are you just as disciplined with your school work and homework? Are you just as disciplined with your career? Remember, a true martial artist is a #BlackBelt at life, not just in the dojo. And it takes a disciplined mindset to be a Black Belt.

For this week, ensure that you are self-disciplined in everything you do. Put in that extra 1% at home, school, work and your martial arts. It will help build a better you.
