HEAT PUMP CARE IN ICY WEATHER:
TURN YOUR THERMOSTAT TO EMERGENCY HEAT when: It’s going to rain and temperatures are going to be close to or below freezing; sleet is expected; icing is expected.
Your outdoor unit will turn off and the electric strip heat will turn on, which should prevent your outdoor unit from freezing over. There is great potential for damage if the unit tries to run while it’s coated with ice. When the freezing precipitation stops you can turn off the emergency heat and let your heat pump restart.
If your outdoor unit should ice over, set your thermostat to Emergency Heat (in other words, stop the outdoor unit from trying to run but still keep your house warm using the back up heat source) and call us immediately. Unfortunately we can't do anything until it thaws, but we CAN check it out to make sure nothing was damaged when it tried to run while frozen.
