The Usefulness of Automated Keyword Rank Checking Data

For years, Google's Webmaster Guidelines have been saying, don't use tools that automate rank checking. Here's the latest version:

"Don't use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check rankings, etc. Such programs consume computing resources and violate our Terms of Service. Google does not recommend the use of products such as WebPosition Gold™ that send automatic or programmatic queries to Google."

In the patent I wrote about recently, one of the sources of information that Google stated they might use to determine if terms and phrases might be commercial in nature (and possibly processed under a different ranking algorithm specifically for commercial terms) were the keywords checked upon by automated tools.

Now the patent was written in 2003, and we have no way of telling whether Google was actually using that information in that manner, or how good they were at doing it.

There is a certain irony to its use though.
