After two years in the making, construction has begun on Putnam County Public Library’s Imagination Portal, a new space with integrated technology and an emphasis on digital literacy. The new space will allow for collaborative digital creativity such as movie-making and music production in small groups with individualized settings, exploratory learning through emerging media including video games, eBooks, web applications, movies, and hands-on experiential programming including performances, arts and crafts, cooking and culinary studies, and lively story-time events. The Imagination Portal combines the spirit of discovery and learning inherent in the traditional literary experience with the excitement of technological transformation and immersion.  A nature theme will play in contrast to the technology found throughout the Imagination Portal, and the centerpiece for the new activity space will be an artificial tree designed by artist Gary Hanick. The tree, which patrons will be able to climb inside, reflects childhood and nature and lends a striking visual impact for both children and adults. Gary Hanick is a co-founder and the president of NatureMaker steel art trees, which has created large-scale nature-themed works of art for airports, hotels, museums and zoos around the world.  To celebrate the new space and the ideas it represents, an inaugural event will be scheduled for the first week of November.
