Perry Vogel will be presenting "All Things Purple Martin" at the March 19th Grand Forks Audubon Society meeting. Mr. Vogel is President and Cofounder of the Purple Martin Association of the Dakotas. His work with the organization was featured in a North Dakota-wide article written by Doug Leier, a biologist for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. He is also involved with North Red River Valley Purple Martin Project, which includes the two public conservation sites located in Greenway of Greater Grand Forks and Turtle River State Park.

Purple Martins are Neotropical migrant songbirds that spend the non-breeding season in South America and then migrate to North America during the breeding season. Purple Martins are entertaining, friendly, sociable, and phenomenal insect eaters; additionally they are now mostly dependent on human-supplied housing because of natural habitat loss.

The presentation will cover the most relevant and popular Purple Martin topics, including:

Attracting Purple Martins
Controlling European Starlings and House Sparrows
Getting Started as a Purple Martin Landlord
Maintaining a Purple Martin Colony
Purple Martin Question and Answer
Tracking Purple Martins from the Dakotas
Up Close with Purple Martins

If you are interested in birds or you already host Purple Martins in your own backyard, you will not want to miss the event. Get ready for spring and shake off those winter blues, we are going to be seeing Purple Martins in the skies very soon.
