Google+ FAQ

I've been noticing that certain questions keep popping up and I have started taking notes which I answer each day.  I figured I would start blog posts with the answers for those making their way over so that there will be an easy repository of answers.  I am so excited to see more and more people really giving Google+ a try.  The more people who do, the more freedom we all will have.  Diversity is really important to a thriving marketplace.  Monopoly is never healthy.  (Besides, I think Google+ is the social network for adults.  ;)  )

So let me know what other questions you have and I will try to get to them!

Explaining Google+ Circles to Square People
In the parlance of Jazz, a square was a person who failed to appreciate the medium. In more broad terms, it meant someone who was out of date, out of touch, or who clung to repressive, traditional ways of thinking. This reminds me of so many people who are apprehensive about Google+ and cling to Facebook like it were a social network safety blanket.

In my opinion, one of the most challenging things about embracing Google+ is the understanding/adoption of Circles. For many people, especially those fiercely loyal to Facebook and Twitter, the concept is difficult to grasp. To make it easier for this group to understand, and more closely relate to, I [often] explain it in this manner:

Google+ Circles are intended to closely mimic the different circles of people you interact with in real life. This can be often, occasionally, professionally or socially.

This includes:

> Inner Circles
> Outer Circles

Here is a personal example:

Because of the nature of my work, I correspond with people like +Mark Traphagen and +Andrij Harasewych on a consistent basis. The relationship we have is professional and the messages we exchange are equally as professional. However, that relationship has nothing to do with the video about making grill cheese that my son +Ethan Howes shared with me recently. I may consider sharing that post with +Chef Dennis Littley (because I know he likes Grilled Cheese), but because of the content and the nature of the different relationships, the message is not relevant to everyone. They are in different circles.

By distinguishing between the different circles of people in your life, the information you share and receive will be more in-line with your immediate interest and intentions. When participating in other social networks like Facebook and Twitter, the posts seen and shared in the timeline are public and are a mash-up of your inner circles and outer circles. This makes it incredibly difficult to extract the valuable information you need, when you need it.

The true value of Google+ Circles lies in their ability to segment the different aspects of your life and then allow you to focus on each part individually, and perhaps more importantly, without distraction. In doing so, the personal/marketing messages that you are sharing and receiving are more relevant and meaningful to you and the other people in your life.
