FDA Advisory Panel Rejects New Testosterone Drug: An advisory committee for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has voted to reject a new oral testosterone drug called Rextoro, saying that the drug is “ineffective.” Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is a controversial hormone treatment used to help men produce more testosterone naturally. Traditionally, testosterone treatments are applied externally, through gels, lotions and even nasal sprays. What Are the Dangers of Testosterone Gel? Some of the biggest problems with topical testosterone are skin reactions (like rashes, itching or swelling) and secondhand exposure. Patients can leave trace amounts on door handles or countertops, which can expose women and children to high doses of testosterone. Clarus Therapeutics Inc. submitted an application for Rextoro back in January, saying that the “easy-to-swallow softgel capsules” were more convenient than gels or ointments. The drug company also believed that the pills were less likely to cause skin reactions or accidental exposure. Why Wasn’t This Drug... Is Low T Making Me Gain Weight?: A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that problems like erectile dysfunction and weight gain can be caused by a lack of estrogen as well as testosterone. In men’s bodies, a small amount of testosterone is regularly converted to estrogen to maintain healthy hormone levels. When testosterone production declines in later years, estrogen levels decline as well, causing unpleasant side effects. The experiment observed 400 healthy men between the ages of 20 and 50. All of the subjects took a drug that naturally suppresses testosterone and estrogen production. Then researchers gave them different doses of testosterone, but half of the men also received medication that stopped the hormone from being converted into estrogen. Researchers discovered that both estrogen and testosterone loss can impact a man’s erectile function. Low estrogen levels also appeared to encourage weight gain. Pharmaceutical companies have made big money by marketing testosterone... Read More » http://www.proffittcox.com/is-low-t-making-me-gain-weight/

Hit-and-Run Driver Kills Youth Pastor: A youth pastor from Union, South Carolina died in a hit-and-run accident in Spartanburg County. Now, police are looking for the driver. The accident happened around 5 a.m. on Monday, September 15. The pastor was headed on a hunting trip with another man from the church, traveling in the eastbound lanes of I-26. The two men were riding in a truck that was towing a golf cart. The driver began to lose control of the truck and fishtailed, running into the median. The truck overturned, throwing both men into the westbound lane. Neither were wearing seatbelts. That was when a car traveling westbound struck the 25-year-old pastor. He died at the scene. The other man in the car was the director at the same church. He is listed in serious condition. The car that struck the young man did not stop to render aid or call the police. Investigators are... Have You Been Taking Warfarin for Blood Clots?: Sun Pharmaceuticals, an Indian drug manufacturer, is recalling its most successful medication Warfarin after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) criticized its poor quality. Warfarin (also known as the brand names Coumadin, Jantoven and Mareva) is a blood thinner used to prevent thrombosis and thromboembolism, which are both caused by blood clots. Many common foods and medications can interact badly with Warfarin, like leafy greens and vitamin K. Patients using Warfarin must undergo blood testing to rule out the risk of excessive bleeding. In May 2014, the FDA wrote a letter to Sun Pharmaceuticals, warning the company about one of its foreign manufacturers. Inspectors had discovered that the staff had been hiding batch failures, conducting unofficial testing and deleting files. The letter told Sun that there was a “general lack of reliability and accuracy in the data generated by [the] firm’s laboratory… that raises concerns about the integrity of all... Are BUIs and DUIs Legally Treated the Same?: Many know what DUI stands for, but if you are not familiar with traveling on the water, you may not know the meaning of BUI. Boating Under the Influence (BUI) deals with many of the same dangers as drunk driving, but some view drinking alcohol while operating a boat as more acceptable than drinking then driving a car. Additionally, while having open containers and the consumption of alcohol is illegal in motor vehicles, South Carolina permits having open containers of alcohol aboard boats. Drunk Boating Accident Near Party Island Results in Death of Two Children A recent fatal boating accident in Anderson County sheds some light on the dangers of drinking and boating. The owner and driver of a 19-foot deck boat has been charged with two felony counts of BUI after a 9-year-old boy and a 5-month-old infant drowned when the boat she was operating capsized. According to authorities, of the... Read More » http://www.proffittcox.com/what-is-the-legal-blood-alcohol-content-for-south-carolina-boaters/

DMAA Linked to Recall of Popular Appetite Suppressor: The drug company Regeneca Worldwide is in the process of conducting a nationwide voluntary recall of its product RegeneSlim, which was sold throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. The company claims the proprietary blend of clinically proven ingredients used in the diet pills sets it apart from other weight loss drugs. However, an analysis by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found the product contained methylhexanamine, also known as 1,3-dimethylamylamine or DMAA, which is currently illegal to market in dietary supplements. Lots involved in the RegeneSlim recall include: 823230415 EX0616R15813 EX0616R15814 11414RE5516 The FDA recommends that consumers who bought RegeneSlim with these lot numbers, found on the bottom right corner of the green and white pill packets, should immediately discontinue use, and return the product to its seller. Is DMAA a Natural Supplement? Drug companies that try to market DMAA often claim it is a natural stimulant derived... How Do I Know If I Need Testosterone Therapy?: Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is a hormone treatment that helps men’s bodies produce higher levels of testosterone, particularly after prostate cancer or hypogonadism (chronic low T). Testosterone, nicknamed the masculine hormone, can stimulate the metabolism and encourage bone and muscle growth. The hormone also famously affects a man’s sex drive, leading many to seek it as a remedy for erectile dysfunction. Does Testosterone Therapy Cure Erectile Dysfunction? Erectile dysfunction (ED) alone is not enough for doctors to recommend testosterone therapy. TRT is meant for men with low testosterone, but men can experience ED for a variety of different reasons: diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and drug side effects can all lead to erectile dysfunction. Even men with normal sexual function and standard T levels are tempted to try TRT thanks to aggressive marketing campaigns. Drug manufacturers use the drug’s more superficial effects – higher sex drive, increased energy, improved muscle mass...
