Straight talk
"That you must only launch #businesses that will improve people's lives and that you are passionate about. You must try to create something different that will stand out. When things go wrong (as they often do), don't give up -- be tenacious. Try to be visible -- it’s important to get out there and sell your product. Many great ideas fail just because their potential customers don’t hear about them."

You need a lot of ingredients to launch a successful business, but a big pot of money isn't one of them. Virgin founder Richard Branson explains why.

It is time to change the rhetoric on #Africa and #renewable energy.

"Rather than solely distributing imported products to harness renewable energy, we should direct our actions toward product innovation, design, manufacturing and distribution in Africa. This approach has far greater social and economic benefits for the continent than what we are seeing today."

Great read from #Acumen

Important lessons for leaders especially in #socent.
1) Leadership is an activity – it is not a title, it is the ability to mobilize people to address their own problems.
2) Effective leaders have a cause, they mobilized people to be a part of their cause and tried to bring change that way.
3) People need to know that they have the power to push their own change, effective leaders empower others.
4) People only take responsibility for what they help create – so leaders have to empower people to know that they have the power to create their own realities.
5) It requires some character of people who will be vulnerable in acknowledging that you don’t always know the answers, it requires people who are ready to say, I don’t know how to tackle certain issues but believe in empowering the team to handle these issues collectively.

What do you think of GiveDirectly's approach? Are you skeptical?

"GiveDirectly, founded in 2008 and recently featured on NPR, finds people living in extreme poverty in Kenya, and sends them the equivalent of up to 1,000 USD by phone. The recipients can spend the money however they like—no prescriptions, no strings attached."

I have always supported infrastructure aid that builds a foundation to help poverty stricken help themselves. But fact remains there are some who are trapped in the never ending cycle of extreme poverty and need urgent help.

"It is easier to build strong children than repair broken men" - Frederick Douglass

"Over the last 20 years, state spending on jails has risen six times faster than spending on higher education. Thus, the U.S. has the highest incarceration rate in the world—seven to 10 times higher than other leading nations. And more than two-thirds of released prisoners are arrested again within three years. Time to flip the equation, and invest in our schools."

Wonderful words.

Do not be daunted by the enormity of the world’s grief. Do justly, now.
Love mercy, now. Walk humbly, now. You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it.
