Did you know that you can now sequence vast stretches of genomic DNA with a device the size of a #usb? If you have been dying to use the #minion, join us this summer in going from #sample to #sequence with #GenomicsintheJungle. Work at the #Amazon's first #greenlab and explore the latest in #wildtech.

This pic by Lucas Bustamente isn't awesome cos of the eyelash viper alone. It's awesome because it is sitting on the minION by Oxford Nanopore, the world's smallest DNA sequencer. Soon we will use it at the Green Lab (launching in July 2018) for a field course on DNA barcoding and disease screening of rescued wildlife in rehabilitation centers.

Case studies will be focused on:
1. DNA fingerprinting
2. The effects of captivity on microbiome diversity
3. Environmental DNA

Seriously. #tryfpi.

This picture was taken on a sequencing mission to Ecuador run by Aaron Pomerantz, Lucas Bustamente and colleagues from Tropical Herping. Check out their findings here: http://www.thenextgenscientist.com/ and here: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/early/2017/09/15/189159

The American Society of Mammalogists has recently established a
program to fund African nationals in studying mammals in their
countries of origin. Their intent is to help promote the science of
mammalogy in Africa, a continent with exceptional mammalian diversity
but lacking in adequate resources for training and educating young
professionals. This program, the African Graduate Student Research
Fund, supports African graduate students who show promise of becoming
leaders of the next generation of mammalogists. They will offer awards of $1500 USD in 2018. Applications are due 15 March 2018. Please spread the word! http://bit.ly/2CQX8hi

Have you ever wondered if wild animals that live close to cities get unhealthy just like human primates do in cities? Luke Fannin, our guest writer this month (and an FPI alumn), has some intriguing answers for you on the question of what urban living does to wild primates. Here is his meticulously researched piece on Soto-Calderón's new paper. http://bit.ly/2CFMEkM

One of the goals of the #palmtree #nursery called the #palmetum at the #Inkaterra Guides Field Station is to breed and grow over 30 species of palms that local #Amazonian people have used #sustainably for hundreds of years. Our #Amazonian #ABCs #fieldcourse just got to #explore this incredible resource, and here they are, taking it all in.
