Gertjan van den Broek is well aware that his Port Harbour Lights development is the first of many projects proposed in what some have described as a renaissance for Port Washington’s lakefront.

Renovation of the retail space in Harbour Lights is underway. Historical buildings come with their unparalleled beauty and charm. But they also come with challenges. Building codes or standards that habe changed over the past 100 years. Work practices that were adapted on the fly and never documented in updated prints. The Harbour Lights phase 1 refurbishment of the M&I Bank skylight,  a unique feature that we wanted to preserve, is another classic example. As we've peeled away the years we keep being surprised by the structural system deployed over the years. Fortunately nothing that the excellent team of Catalyst Construction,  SPS Architects,  Pierce Engineering and Dean Jacoby have not been able to solve.

More stories to come. Or visit the Port Exploreum, Boerner Building or Port Washington Historical Society Resource center to hear about all of their tales.

All will probably say it would have been far less of a headache and expense to tear them down and start with a clean slate. But all would also agree that the easy  thing to do is not always the right thing to do. Preserving Port's unique character is the right thing to do. Even if it takes a little longer and a little more. There is no rush for Port. We've been here for 180 years and she will be here long after we're all gone.

The waters of Lake Michigan are home to well-preserved shipwrecks spanning more than 125 years of maritime travel and commerce on the Great Lakes. Groups like the Wisconsin Maritime Museum and Wisconsin Historical Society are working to secure greater long-term protection for these historical treasures.
