The world of Google+ is interesting. One thinks it has pretty much dropped off the radar as a marketing tool. So much so, Google have to inform me that I've not posted for so long that they will be deleting my page.

So I thought I would pay it a visit and yes, as per my expectations it is a desolate wasteland. But hey everyone needs somewhere to chill to get away from the world and G+ looks exactly like that place.

Nice review over on Facebook from Penny Darwell-Taylor of Classic Festivals and Events in Earl Soham.

Excellent service provided by Nigel. Visited my office as soon as he could and dealt with the pc problems promptly . Would recommend Nigel and would call on him again if we have any pc problems . Thank you

You're welcome, Penny.

I'll be ready for bed tonight, although I will have to get up at 3 to check the overnight job is still running !
The fact that my weekly update is coming late on Sunday indicates the status of my weekend. I've been completing a HUGE Google Apps For Business migration for a new customer with multiple email accounts, multiple Outlook profiles, multiple PST files ( one of which has 60,000 email messages in it ! ) and 2000 contacts NOT in the main contacts list but in the auto-complete cache.

Things weren't helped when the customers laptop ( I'm actually using two machines concurrently ) crashed while completing an overnight job, so have been on the back foot as far as elapsed time goes. However, now back on track for completion and delivery of a fully migrated platform at 10AM tomorrow.

As you can imagine I have had to have my wits about me ( the job log is currently 3 pages long ), so social media has taken a back seat for a day or so. A long, but very satisfying job.

The fact that this week's update is coming out at almost 9PM on a Saturday gives you an idea of what my working life is like at the moment. "Relentless" is probably the best word to describe it, which leaves me feeling both very positive and completely exhausted simultaneously !

Starting to roll out a lot of the new machines now to beat the XP deadline across both home and business users. A mix of Windows 7 and Windows 8 made to look like Windows 7. Anyone see a patternĀ  here ?

Had an interesting issue where on the same day two completely different customers had trouble sending email both with the same errors. Turns out the company hosting their email servers had one of their outbound scanning servers blacklisted so email was being bounced back as spam.

Another head scratcher this week was intermittent network connectivity issues where even multiple passes at selective startup wasn't able to give a definite steer as to the cause. I happened to notice that a McAfee update had gone in a week or so ago, and the customer thinks their problems might have started then. Just for grins, McAfee uninstalled and surprise, surprise ... problem resolved. Replaced with an alternative product and all is well.

So another good week with problems resolved across the board and lots of new toys for people to play with. Everyone likes shiny !

Started using this useful little gadget this week and wanted to share.

If you have an old laptop hard disk drive or two knocking around and they have a SATA interface, then you can easily re-use them for eternal storage with an enclosure. This unit has worked well for me and has the benefit of USB 3.0 connectivity for faster data transfer if your PC supports it, but will also work on older USB ports.

Really easy to fit the drive without tools and no extra power supply needed. Very much just plug and go, and at a very reasonable price.

There are lots of different options but the positive reviews steered me toward this particular model and I have not been disappointed.

This weeks message from Poorly PC is really quite sobering. Just because you have a modern laptop with a modern version of Windows doesn't mean you are safe from hardware failure.

A hard disk failed in a customer laptop this week, and being without a backup, it was panic stations for the user as the only copy of some business data was stored on that very disk and Windows wouldn't start.

Luckily the machine was able to boot in safe mode, enabling me to retrieve a copy of the data. However, you don't really ever want "luck" to play too big a part in your business IT strategy, however large or small that business might be.

I'll be writing a blog post about my thoughts on backup over the coming weeks so keep an eye out for that, but in the meantime ... if you run a business and you don't have a second copy of your data, you are putting your livelihood and those that depend on you at risk.

Well G+'ers it's been a bonkers week for sure at Poorly PC. First week back for most people and everyone is needing their IT attended to.

Not that I'm complaining, mind. The mad hours, the missed meals, the amount of kit on deck at Poorly PC HQ ... all good stuff and long may it continue ( although I have put a recurring calendar entry in for "dinner break" in an attempt to sort that particular issue out ! ).

Social media has been very much reactive rather than proactive, but if a window of opportunity opens, I know where I'll be spending my time.

This really is very serious for all UK PC users.

The advice in the article is basic, but if anyone wants to chat through some advanced prevention techniques or the setting up of a more robust backup strategy, then please reply to this post and we'll get something arranged.

I'm not looking forward to the first calls on this where people's business data is lost for good, or years of digital photos and memories are unrecoverable.
