Advent from the Latin adventus means “coming” and in Christian churches, this is a time of preparations for Christmas and for celebrating the return of Jesus Christ.

Advent lasts about four weeks, preceding Christmas (four Sundays of Advent), but in the old tradition it began on November 12 or 14 , just after St. Martin’s day and lasted 40 days!

There are many interesting and disappearing customs and traditions that are a combination of religion, observation and the rhythm of nature and a pinch of some magical beliefs – as it always is in the traditional cultures.

New post appeared on our blog this week. This time it is a story written by Barbara, who had been travelling in Poland with Zenon in 2017.

"It is hard to believe that it has taken me so long to uncover my Polish roots, because they were really there all along. For me, being in Poland was walking on hallowed ground. There truly are no words that are significant enough to express what Poland, its people, and all of humanity have suffered. At it’s very root, pure evil and hatred. It was my time to reach, remember, reflect, release, renew, rethink, refresh, and receive."

In Poland we don’t have the tradition of Thanksgiving Day as you have in the US and in some other countries. We have harvest holidays (’dożynki’) in late summer when farmers thank for the reaped crops. This tradition dates back to the pre-Christian times.

Gratitude is something I incorporated into my daily routine some time ago. Today, taking this opportunity of the holiday you have in the US (where most of our readers and guests come from), allow me to share with you my gratefulness for what happened in PolishOrigins this year.

I am grateful that all of the dozens of our tours ended safely.

I am grateful that our team is not only super competent but also 100% (in some cases even more) dedicated to what they do.

I am grateful that we can do what we do. That we can provide these profound experiences of uncovering family histories and to make good use our time on what is so meaningful for our clients and for us.

I am grateful that our clients return to us.

I am grateful that we can be professionals. That we can make a living by doing all this.

Have a Family Thanksgiving!
