Most people today have modern appliances such as plasma TVs, hair dryers, microwaves, dishwashers, washers, dryers, space heaters, air conditioners and other types of appliances that require more wattage & voltage than what most of the older homes in San Diego have available. Increasing the amount of power that comes into your home is the first step to modernizing your home’s electrical system.

When compared to traditional incandescent light bulbs; the durability of LED lights is exceptionally longer, as much as 60,000 times more; and the energy consumption rate is also as low as 90%, resulting in higher safety and reduced cost of maintenance. Among others, these important qualities make them suitable for a variety of residential, commercial, recreational, automotive, military applications, and much more. You can incorporate LED lights in your home or work place cleanly and quickly.

A newer trend has begun to set in over the last few years: More and more people are now installing LED lights in their homes. Over the last year, however, the cost of LEDs has dropped like a rock. Not only are LEDs cost efficient, but in the hands of a skilled electrician, your home is like a canvas – and LEDs are the different shades of colors that give it meaning.

Due to the numerous risks involved, many projects involving electricity are better left to the experts. However, you can certainly diagnose issues before the electrician arrives. Here are some of the most common electrical issues – and how to possibly troubleshoot them!

Adding some modern upgrades can put a huge strain on older electrical systems! Older systems are usually supplied with anywhere from 60-100 amps, which just isn’t enough to drive all these and other modern appliances and devices.

One hundred amps may be enough power if your larger appliances use natural gas. But if you have an electric oven, electric cook top, central air, electric water heater, electric dryer, Jacuzzi spa, welder (hey, some guys weld in their garages), which all use 240v and run the amperage gamut from 30 to 50 amps, each, then most likely, you’ve probably already got a 200 amp panel.

Consider upgrading your electrical services to 200 amps or more in order to be completely sure that all your power needs are being met. Share such ideas and plans to upgrade with your local electrician to get the best solution but, just remember, spending money now to expand your electrical supply will save you time and money in the long run. I always like to say, “It’s better to have it and not need it than it is to need it and not have it”.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) states that homes using old aluminum wire are “55 times more likely to have one or more connections reach fire hazard conditions” than a home wired with copper.

What is the cause of this alarming statistic? Aluminum is a soft metal, and it can expand or contract on heating or cooling. Copper also does the same but the rate at which both expand and shrink vary. Besides, most metals oxidize when exposed to oxygen; however, when copper undergoes oxidation, it forms a conductor, whereas aluminum forms a resistance, resulting in more heat which can affect the circuit breaker. Subsequently, this could cause electrical problems like dimming lights, power outages, fluctuations, and overloaded switchboards that can harm your devices and cause electrical fires. Always look out for signs of melting, and for the smell of burnt wires. http://bit.ly/1Pg5twi

Circuit breakers are, surprisingly, a simple system despite handling up to more than 400 amps and efficiently regulating and distributing electricity all over your home. Their efficiency, nevertheless, may be compromised due to a number of factors. We review some of these in full. Read on to learn more at http://bit.ly/1C3v4hJ

Just as a person needs regular checkups to maintain perfect health, your house needs regular safety checkups to ensure the safety of the electrical systems.

As the minimum standard for electrical safety in the U.S., electricians work under the national electrical code (NEC) when inspecting homes. This code defines the parameters within which the inspection must be conducted.

It pays to be vigilant in the case of older aluminum wiring because the problems often begin to arise only when it’s too late. Considering the fact that a typical home has at least 200 electrical connections, usually many more, the fire hazard is enormous. One bad splice or connection is one too many.

Many people think that handling electrical repairs is one of the toughest or scariest things to avoid. This is not entirely correct. Yes, it can be tricky and even risky if you don’t handle electrical issues wisely. Knowing some basics is always helpful. This way, you might attend to the minor electrical issues on your own without unnecessary delay or needing professional help. But first, you’re going to need some basic tools.

I had been calling and leaving my number with another electrician I was referred to when we purchased our lights. But after two weeks, I called MY electric company! They responded immediately, scheduled me within the week, and came on time to install the pendant lamps expertly! Once here there were efficient, respectful of my property, friendly, and finished earlier than expected. I appreciate it, thank you so much!

We recently contacted Point Loma Electric, who has done electrical work for us in the past, for a problem where we needed to add and update old wiring in an old property. They are unique in specializing in rewiring old properties, and they did not disappoint! We were super impressed with how quickly they resolved the issue. They were very professional and their workmenship was great. Several unforeseen problems arose once they started the job. They immediately let us know what needed to be done and gave us a professional written estimate and finished everything to our satisfaction. I recommend them highly!!! J. Foster

I bought a fan with an up-light and installed it myself. The light didn’t work. I called the manufacturer and spent a half hour on the phone with their tech support; they were unable to figure out why the light wouldn’t work. Then I called an electrician who spent one and a half hours, running back and forth to his truck, climbing up and down his ladder and testing circuits. He finally gave up. Then I heard a commercial for Point Loma Electric on Mike Slater’s Talk Show. They guarantee their work, so I figured I had nothing to lose. Jim Dent showed up. I watched thinking I’d learn something. He removed the switch plate removed two wire nuts, touched two wires together, found the problem and corrected it. It took less than 2 minutes. Here’s what I learned. If you have an electrical problem, call Point Loma Electric…They know what they’re doing and will fix it in no time…the first time. Ron Sharrow

To Jamie Dent on behalf of Point Loma Electric I was referred to Point Loma Electric by my landscaper Frankie Sandoval, due to some flicking lights concerns. He informed me that Point Loma Electric specializes in wiring safety and modernization of older homes. From my initial contact with Point Loma Electric I was impressed. The Customer Care Liaison, Ms. Kirra LeBron demonstrated exceptional professionalism while answering my many questions, resolving discrepancies and ensuring me that the best possible job would be performed at a paramount value. From there, the Point Loma Electricians Ramone and Charlie dispatched to my house for the initial inspection. In their efforts to provide the highest level of service, they were accommodating and diligent during the inspection; once completed they sat me down and covered every concern I had and those they discovered. Admittedly, I was overwhelmed by the critical hazards they uncovered and by the quoted estimate. With heavy heart, the deal was made. However, it was soon lifted. From start to finish both technicians were courteous, proficient and considerate of my trepidation, assuring me my needs would be meet. The final outcome was above and beyond my expectations. I was not prepared for this level of quality, workmanship, and attention to detail. Once completed, they not only guaranteed the electrical safety of my house but transformed the lighting in my home to directly manifest the essence of me. Thank you! The Dent family name and Point Loma Electric company has unmatched business and quality integrity. Not only have you gained a customer for life, I will refer everyone in know that is in need of quality electrical work to Point Loma Electric. You made my family’s safety and security your priority and I cannot thank you enough! Sincerely, Beverly Barr

I called to request an estimate for a whole house rewire. After giving all my information I was informed there is a $59 travel fee to receive the estimate. The company is in Point Loma and I am in North Park.. a 15 minute drive. Needless to say I was disappointed, all other companies i've contacted so far do free estimates.. especially for a large rewire job. Declined to have them come. I guess someone else will be receiving my business!

I have had them come to my house twice for a complete evaluation of my electrical system, inside wiring and adding an outdoor circuit breaker. They are highly professional, knowledgeable, and respect your property by wearing coverings over their shoes. I will continue to use them for my electrical needs,

Mario did a fabulous job helping us with some electrical issues in our old home. One was particularly difficult but he stuck with it until it was fixed completely. We were very satisfied with the work and the price, and Mario was great to work with. We would definitely use Point Loma Electric again for any electrical issues.
