Spending as few as six minutes with a good book can reduce stress levels by as much as 70%! A study from the University of Sussex found that reading reduced stress better and more quickly than other methods like listening to music, drinking tea, or going for a walk. Researchers believe that the concentration you give a good book helps distract you, reducing heart rate and muscle tension caused by stress. Reading also actively engages your imagination and stimulates your creativity. What’s your favorite stress-relieving book to get lost in? An extra hour of sleep isn’t just a luxury — it can make a real impact on your physical and cognitive health. Going from 7.5 to 6.5 hours of sleep made participants in a recent study struggle on cognitive tests. Unfortunately, catching up on sleep over the weekend isn’t a solution: memories need to be moved from short- to long-term memory within 24 hours of of being formed before you run the risk of forgetting them. In addition, over 500 genes are affected by lack of sleep, and losing just one hour of sleep increased activity in genes linked to inflammation, immune response, stress response, and even risk of cancer. The good news: this gene activity reversed when participants added an hour of sleep back into their schedule. Do you get as much sleep as you need? "I also thought it would be significant as part of our Civil War programming to consider Grant and Lee in the context of the last year of the war in Virginia, from May 1864 to April 1865, when they confronted each other in the most elemental way possible as commanders of opposing armies bent on each other’s destruction."
Curator David Ward on his inspiration to feature both Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee in our National Portrait Gallery's "One Life" gallery

Gold Steady, American Eagle Bullion Coins Rise Slightly

Gold ended flat to start the new trading week on Monday, staying above $1,300 an ounce yet still headed for a July decline. Gold for August delivery ended at $1,303.30 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.

"In view of the numerous geopolitical risks — fighting has increased again recently in the east of Ukraine, for example, and the cease-fire in the Gaza Strip failed to hold — gold is clearly in greater demand again as a safe haven," MarketWatch quoted Eugen Weinberg, head of commodity research at Commerzbank in Frankfurt."However, because physical demand in China and India, the two most important gold markets, is subdued at present, the latest price rises were doubtless attributable above all to short-term-oriented market participants."
