Control Conflict With A Skilled External Facilitator - Most project teams endure conflict without a hitch. It’s a normal part of the process and an activity that helps the team make the best decisions and craft the most efficient solutions to problems. But if stakeholders or others are particularly onerous—or if one party has enough influence to quell dissenters and get their way no matter what—it can be difficult for even a skilled and experienced internal facilitator to keep a handle on conflict.http://bit.ly/1Qoahzx #projectmanagement @PMAlliance #PMP #PMO
Highly-placed stakeholders may exert tremendous pressure if discussions aren’t progressing the way they’d like, the use of an outside facilitator can offer a much-needed dose of neutrality and composure.

New Year’s Resolutions, PMP Style. - We all do it. January rolls around and everyone looks ahead to all the things they want to accomplish. Resolutions can be an inspiring way to kick off the new year, but what happens, months later, when nothing has been achieved and the commitment fades? There are many reasons New Year’s resolutions never come to pass. If a PMP (or entire PMO) wants to really move the needle and maintain their resolve, a few key strategies can help. http://bit.ly/1RjYN3d #PMP #PMOT

Worried About Being Replaced? The opportunity to work with an outside consulting firm can sometimes prompt PMPs to worry that the external project expert will replace them. But that’s not how the collaboration works, and it’s a concern that could potentially stop a project team from getting the support they require just when they need it the very most. Outside consultants work alongside the manager already overseeing the project, not as a replacement for them. If your PMO is considering a partnership with an external expert, be sure you understand how the arrangement works so you can focus on achieving success rather than worrying if your position is safe.

If your project team finds itself on the receiving end of unexpected high-level scrutiny or dissatisfaction, take a minute to see if you’ve inadvertently taken an action that sometimes doesn’t sit well with executive groups. #pmalliance #projectmanagement

Like most tools available to PMPs, the project post-mortem can be either more or less valuable depending on how effectively it’s utilized. And though teams may be diligent in reviewing past projects, they could be missing important details and opportunities for improvement. If your PMO wants to increase the benefits gained from the project review process, see if you’re inadvertently hampering your own efforts with any of these common mistakes. #projectmanagement #pmos #pmalliance http://bit.ly/1Mnaezy

The budget process is often fairly clear cut, with reviews and approvals a well-worn process. But some project teams continue to make a handful of base-level mistakes that could cause them serious problems down the road. If your PMO encounters challenges in the budget development cycle, consider if you’re inadvertently falling into one of these bad habits.

There are many reasons to partner with an outside consulting firm. Some PMOs need the help of an expert with a neutral perspective, for example, while others are looking for guidance in a specific niche to augment their internal knowledge base. Many project teams simply need the assistance of a firm with experience in strong project methodologies. But another benefit the PMO can realize is the ability of an external firm to improve the team’s project budget adherence in the short term as well as across future projects. http://bit.ly/1O8QKjM by @PMAlliance #projectmanagement
Outside consultants can offer assistance with defining clearer project endpoints, identifying potential problems, avoiding late or rush fees, and reducing or eliminating overtime hours for employees.

The benefits of partnering with an outside expert may stack up more than you think. There are time-tested tools and insight that an experienced consultancy brings to the table. And in tallying the potential soft costs that result from tackling complex or troubled projects on your own, your cost/benefit analysis must also address the question: Can your organization really afford for this project to fail? #projectmanagement http://bit.ly/1UcMROW

As project teams look to make the most of their limited resources by rounding out the PMO’s skill set, facilitation is often low on the priority list. Sometimes seen as a soft skill, a strong facilitator actually has the power to move projects forward like few other competencies can. http://bit.ly/1SYuSem by #AIF #projectmanagement

Better leverage the webinar platform for project meetings w/end users & sponsors. Webinars have become an increasingly popular platform for all sorts of educational events, from competency training to new product launches. But can they really replace live meetings—whether face-to-face or by telephone or video conference—where project teams interact with sponsors, end users, and other stakeholders? The answer: It depends. #projectmanagement #pmalliance #pmos http://bit.ly/1VO1P2k
