To kick off 2017 we have just implemented an enhancement that allows you to specify the map type and distance units that you would like to be used when people look at a route you've shared - this will override the recipient's own preferences when the route is initially displayed, although they can of course change the map type and units at any time once the map has loaded.

May we take this opportunity to wish you all a healthy and happy 2017.

We have just released the latest upgrade to plotaroute.com, which introduces an option to highlight hills on the route map with different colours - red for uphill and green for downhill. The darkness of the colour indicates how steep the incline is, with darker colours representing steeper sections.

Since plotaroute.com was launched we've implemented dozens of suggestions from users and plan to continue to invest in enhancing the site on an ongoing basis. We try to focus on adding new features that we think will benefit lots of people but it isn't always easy to choose from the growing list we have. So, to help us to understand which are the most popular requested features, we've now introduced a new Feature Requests section on the site where you can vote for the new features and enhancements that you are most interested in.

Make your routes load more quickly and take up less space on your GPS device by using our new 'Reduce Points' feature to shrink the size of your route with very minimal loss of accuracy.

If you're concerned about privacy and don't want to share routes that start from or finish at your house, you can now use the new "Delete Homestretch" function in our route planner to quickly and easily delete short sections from the start or end of the route.

It is now even easier to plot your bike routes with the plotaroute.com route planner.

We have just added a "BY BIKE" option to our Auto Plot feature. The new 'By Bike' option will enable you to auto plot on paths that are deemed suitable for bikes by the mapping providers we use and to auto plot on roads, taking into account known bike paths and the direction of traffic where appropriate (e.g. one-way streets and roundabouts).

We are currently in the process of implementing some changes to our elevation profiles and statistics following feedback some users that occasional fluctuations in elevation readings sometimes did not reflect real world conditions and were leading to inflated total ascent calculations. To alleviate this problem we have decided to increase the distance interval between elevation readings, which should help to smooth out superficial bumps and dips that don't have a material effect on the overall profile of the route.

As part of these changes, we have also added a new 'Total Descent' figure to the elevation statistics available for each route.
The changes should make it easier to compare ascent calculations from plotaroute.com with ascent calculations from other devices and applications, although ascent calculations will always vary depending on the distance between the elevation readings used and that ascent calculations by GPS devices will often be affected by measurement inaccuracies and signal loss, so please bear this in mind when comparing ascent figures from different sources.

We're pleased to announce that we've added an option to avoid having to repeatedly sign in to the plotaroute.com website each time your login session expires. If you tick the "Keep Me Signed In" box when you sign in, you'll only be prompted to sign in again on the device you're using if you choose to sign out or haven't used the website for some time.

We've just released our latest upgrade to plotaroute.com, which introduces the ability to annotate your route maps with short text labels - great for event organisers to indicate the location of things like water stations or toilets/restrooms and highlighting points of interest on hikes.

To see an example of the new labels feature in action, take a look at the my Machame Route to the summit of Mount Kilomanjaro (https://www.plotaroute.com/route/135741). This is a challenge I will be attempting in September 2016 in memory of my wife, who tragically passed away from ovarian cancer three months ago at the age of just 41. I will be raising money for two charities that helped her a great deal, so if you would like to support me I would very grateful. Please visit my Kilomanjaro for Cancer fundraising page to find out more at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/SomeoneSpecial/Beata
