You’re probably well aware of aphthous stomatitis, but you’re more likely to call it an ulcer (or a canker sore). About one in five people have a history of recurrent mouth ulcers.

Children in the USA (ages six-18 years old) eat at least 3,300 mg of sodium a day. While that opening line might strike you as just a number, the truth is much more chilling. That number, from the CDC, is higher than the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans of less than 2,300 mg per day. Furthermore, that number is all the sodium a child eats before the food gets to the table—any added table salt takes that number even higher.

We compound a lot of medications for our customers here at the Pleasant Hills Apothecary, but did you know that we can also compound medications for your birds? A wide variety of birds are kept as pets, and just like all life, these birds may get sick and/or become injured at times in their lives.

If you have never suffered from heartburn, consider yourself lucky. It’s a horribly uncomfortably condition where the contents of one’s stomach back up into the esophagus. In babies, it’s not at all uncommon to have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Being common in babies, however, doesn’t mean that it’s easy for them. The spit up and vomiting can cause throat pain, breathing problems, and problems with getting enough nourishment. GERD may cause babies to gag and cough and even wake up screaming.

On the news, you’ve probably heard about the spread of antibiotic-resistant germs. These are a handful of germs for which medical science has no cure—germs that are themselves immune to our current selection of antibiotics. To patients who contract these antibiotic-resistant germs, there is little we can do to help. The scary part of this story is that there are now more antibiotic-resistant germs out there, and they’re getting stronger.

Heat stroke is a very serious medical emergency, and it is something people in our area face every year. While we may be known for December’s snow-filled Steelers’ games and beautiful fall foliage, our summers can get more than hot enough to cause heat stroke.
