About this event:

According to business executives, events are the No. 1 marketing channel in terms of driving revenue and reaping ROI. Meetings are the fastest way to educate, inform, gain consensus, handle crises and train people. So why do they keep coming under attack?

If you're involved in the meetings industry, there may be things you're doing (or not doing) that are making it easier for the media, politicians or even your boss to dismiss the true importance of the meetings and events you plan, attend or are supporting.

Join us for this 30-min conversation with Christy Lamagna, CMP, CMM, CTSM, to discover how and why you should become a meetings advocate, and the little things you can do that could dramatically effect how people view this industry.

:::

About our guest:  Christy Lamagna, CMP, CMM, CTSM

When Christy joined the meetings industry 25 years ago, event planning was more of a concept than a recognized profession. In the ensuing two and a half decades, she proudly participated in its evolution while growing along with it. By teaching two, strategic planning classes at the University level for the last ten years, Christy is actively striving to shape the industry’s future.

An endless drive for self-growth, Christy earned a Masters in Arts degree, graduating cum laude, and holds multiple industry certifications, (CMP, CMM, CTSM). Christy’s contributions to the industry are seen in her extensive library of thought-provoking articles stratetic.events/inthenews as well as webinars (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=christy+lamagna+amex+open) she hosts and through events at which she speaks.

Recently, featured in an American Express spot (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXNi6i6mg2I) and the recipient of the ‘Enterprising Woman of the Year Finalist,’ a ‘Top 25 Woman Entrepreneurs and Business Owners’ and an ‘Oneonta Alumni of Distinction,’ Christy has been recognized nationwide for her achievements and contributions as leader, mentor and entrepreneur.
In 2001 Christy set out on a mission to bring the industry and the talented professionals who share her passion for strategic planning the respect they deserve. Her first step was founding Strategic Meetings & Events, a strategic planning firm which produces goal-driven corporate meetings, worldwide. In 2015, she launched SME Displays (strategicdisplays.com) a tradeshow and displays company which brings SME’s quality of service and attention to detail to displays sales worldwide.

‘Life Strategies with Christy Lamagna,’ a series of online courses, a formal mentoring program and one on one coaching had its soft launch in January of 2016 and already has a waiting list of participants. The goal for that endeavor is to inspire and help as many people as possible achieve their goals regardless of their field.

Christy’s passion for helping others is not limited to the event industry. She is on the Board of Directors of Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village (ASYV.org), an active contributor to Heart for Honduras (http://www.friendsofheartsforhonduras.org/), and Valorclinic.org, a foundation to help homeless veterans. Her philosophy of giving back is based on the ‘Tikkun Olam’ concept which means ‘repair of the world.’
The focus of her life and career is shifting to giving back. She has been incredibly blessed and wants to return her good fortune to as many people and causes as possible, while growing and learning throughout the process.

Here's some of the things we'll be discussing today:

- How advocacy starts with you.

- Why people don't understand what we do.

- How to communicate the value of our work so we know how to respond when talking to the C-suite, defending the need for a site visit, for not cancelling a meeting, when a newspaper criticizes a $28 muffin or when someone calls a meeting a boondoggle.

- Why one of the great ironies of our profession is that we're great at planning everything for everything else but we often fail to plan for our own future. And how we can change that.

Do you have any questions? You can post them as questions here or use the Q&A button on the video to ask them during the broadcast. Please note: You'll need to be logged into Google to be able to use the Q&A app.

If you're on a phone, you may need to watch this directly on our YouTube page. That link is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0cjwY6d2lc

CVBs struggle with how they should market destinations to meeting and event planners. Here are some of the challenges they face as well as some solutions they came up with. What would you add? #eventprofs   #meetingprofs   #dmai

We had a really interesting discussion in New Orleans at #SoMeT15US  about what meeting and event planners want from DMOs and CVBs and how they can market to them. Here's a summary of what we discussed.
