Profile – Pierre van der Hoven

Pierre is a qualified chartered accountant and chartered marketer. His MBA thesis topic focused on the international media business and in particular marketing the industry internationally. Pierre has spent his entire working career in the media and travel industries. His five years at the SABC, occupying various financial and strategic positions, gave him experience across all media disciplines. He was extensively involved in plotting the SABC strategy for the new SABC Board just before the first demographic elections.

Pierre then joined RCI responsible for Finance, Administration and Strategy Development. He was later appointed as Financial Director of RCI,

Pierre was then a founder and key player in setting up a number of start up media companies including eTV (first commercial free-to-air television in SA), YFM (large regional radio station in SA), Yarona FM (regional radio station in Botswana), SANHU (wildlife production company), Phoenix (documentary production company) and Three Blind Mice (TBM) Communications (digital signage / communication business). In all these start ups he prepared the business plans, raised the capital and implemented the business models. His duties included marketing and sales. Yfm won a Grand Prix Loerie award while Pierre headed up the Marketing function.

He acted as TBM's CEO for seven years and was then a founder and CEO of Southern Africa Direct which was a multi platform company marketing Southern Africa using television (24/7 TV Channel 270 on SKY in the UK), and online (www.sadirect.com). The company focused on telling the African story in the Lifestyle & Culture, Travel & Tourism and Commerce genres.

Pierre then launched Baobab International (www.baobabinternational.com) – a consultancy specialising in broadcasting, media, marketing, advertising, communication, new media (Web2.0) and content creation, and Southern Africa Report (www.southernafricareport.com) - a political and economic bulletin for Southern Africa.

Pierre has delivered papers at numerous conferences including the following; AdFocus, African Telecommunications Summit, Convergence Summit, Digital Signage (Chicago), eTourism Africa (JHB & Nairobi) and the Broadcast, Film & Convergence (Nairobi). Pierre has been involved in numerous awards from a Grand Prix Loerie award, numerous Technology Top 100 awards, Africa SMME award, NSTF awards to being personally appointed by the SA Government as an Innovation Ambassador. Pierre sits on the Council of the Da Vinci University and on the SAARF RAMS & TAMS councils.
