IC 4628 - The Prawn Nebula

In this image, taken by +Dylan O'Donnell from his own Observatory in Byron Bay, Australia, using an 11″ Celestron F2 RASA telescope and a QHY9 mono CCD you can see the Prawn Nebula (IC 4628, Gum 56), an HII region emission nebula, located in the constellation of Scorpius (The Scorpion, https://goo.gl/q4F1eg), about 6,000 light-years away from Earth. It has a diameter of about 250 light-years.

IC 4628 is a massive stellar nursery with lots of ongoing star formation (https://goo.gl/Mn2Zxf) and many young and hot stars ionizing the gas in the nebula with their strong ultraviolet radiation, turning it into an emission nebula.

It is home (https://goo.gl/bezRBQ) to rare O-type stars (https://goo.gl/R0llCW), short-lived blue giants which will end their lives as supernovae (https://goo.gl/VhJNhj) after just a few million years.

I usually go with Dylan's processing of his images, but this time I did some additional processing on the image, mostly to get some more distinction between the red and blue channel. In the end it mostly is a question of personal preference, you can find Dylan's original image here:

What is an emission nebula?

An emission nebula is a cloud of ionized gas (often by ultraviolet radiation from nearby stars) emitting light of various colors, in case of HII mostly reddish-pink (viewed in natural colors). More information here:
