Quickie: Iceberg A68 near the Larsen C Ice Shelf, Antarctica

In this image, taken by the European Sentinel-3 satellite (https://goo.gl/6fyYfz) on January 16th, 2018, you can see the massive Iceberg A68 (https://goo.gl/mASPMo), which calved from the Larsen C Ice Shelf (https://goo.gl/k5iP1F) in Antarctica in July 2017.

For comparison: The 5,800 square kilometers Iceberg is about two times the size of Luxembourg, larger than Delaware, and weighing one trillion tonnes.

The Pleiades - Messier 45

In this image taken by +Dylan O'Donnell using a Celestron RASA telescope you can see the Pleiades (Messier 45). It is an open star cluster located in the constellation of Taurus (The Bull, https://goo.gl/9FLfn0), about 444 light-years away from Earth. The whole cluster has a diameter of about 13 light-years.

The Pleiades are dominated by middle-aged hot B-type stars (https://goo.gl/YlGej0), hence the blue color. The faint glow around the stars is starlight reflecting from a dust cloud in the interstellar medium, through which the stars are currently passing.

They are also called the "Seven Sisters", the nine brightest stars of the cluster are named after the Seven Sisters of Greek mythology: Sterope, Merope, Electra, Maia, Taygeta, Celaeno, and Alcyone, and their parents Atlas and Pleione. The brightest of them is Alcyone (Eta Tauri, https://goo.gl/G9bjOM), which can be seen a little to the right of the center of the image. It has a luminosity about 2,400 times that of our Sun and about 8 times its radius.

What is an open cluster?

An open cluster is a group of up to a few thousand stars that have their origin in the same stellar nursery and are of roughly the same age. They are bound together by their gravitational forces. More information here:

Satellite images 2017 Recap

A new blog post looking back at some of the more interesting and beautiful satellite images I processed in 2017.

It features mostly images by the Sentinel-2 satellites and Landsat 8, but you will find images from a variety of satellites, even an old American spy satellite used during the cold war, and the quality it delivered is quite outstanding.

Read it here:
