4 MPix Camera with DoubleRate Technology of Photonfocus

By introducing our new DR1-D2048 camera series we've widened our portfolio of high speed cameras. The new camera features a reolution of 4 MPixel and an internal data compression of 2:1. Three different sensor types (black&white, color and NIR) are available for this new camera series. High frame rates are achieved by compressing the image data in the FPGA of the camera. By compressing the image data this camera can deliver 45 full frames per second at a resolution von 2048x2048 pixel using a standard GigE interface. Decompression of the image data is done by the CPU of the host system in realtime.

New Release of the Photonfocus HSI SDK

Our new Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) SDK is now including the new MV1-D2048x1088-HS01-96-G2 HSI linescan camera, featuring 100 spectral lines. With the new release, you can now use 3 sensors of IMEC’s hyperspectral imaging sensors together with our SDK. Next step will be to include the 150-line sensor that is integrated into our MV1-D2048x1088-HS05-96-G2 camera.

Photonfocus releases HyperSpectral SDK. Test, calibrate and generate hypercubes for HSI cameras.

The new Photonfocus HyperSpectral SDK is a software tool designed to test hyperspectral imaging (HSI) cameras and guide the generation of hypercubes. The tool supports all vendor cameras using IMEC (Leuven, Belgium) HSI 4x4 and 5x5 matrix sensors. The SDK includes a wizard to guide the calibration process and code examples to help the user in the first implementation steps.

Hyperspectral sensors are designed to work in a specific spectral range. Bandpass optical filters are used avoid spectral leaking and unwanted second order responses outside of the sensor's active spectral range. IMEC HSI sensors are calibrated with previous knowledge of the filters used in order to compensate the possible errors or mismatches due to the filter effect. The SDK is able to parse the information of the XML calibration file provided by IMEC and use it for the spectral correction.

Reflectance calculation reduces the influence of the light source spectra, avoids saturation and optimizes the dynamic range of the hyperspectral imaging system. The computed reflectance enables the comparison of the object spectra with available databases. In addition, demosaicing is used to compensate the effects of the mosaic pattern in the hyperspectral image. This is done by resampling the data of each band into the same regular grid, so that all bands of the spectral image are aligned.

Spectral correction recomposes a raw spectrum into a corrected spectrum, removing higher-order and cross-talk signals from the spectrum and avoiding spectral contributions from unwanted bands. Once the spectral correction is applied to the reflectance hypercube, the available bands change in frequency and number.

The resultant hypercubes are stored in a ENVI Band Sequential (BSQ) file format, which contains a header file with the system setup and sensor information and a file containing the hyperspectral data. ENVI output files can be opened and analyzed by numerous image processing tools, such as Matlab.

Registered customers can evaluate the HyperSpectral SDK for 15 days. Following a successful evaluation, customers can purchase a USB Dongle license in order to continue using the software. The SDK can be used with the Photonfocus HSI cameras MV1-D2048x1088-HS02-96-G2-10 and MV1-D2048x1088-HS03-96-G2-10.

Combined Colour 2D and 3D Inspection System

With the increase in demand for industrial vision systems that combine colour 2D and 3D inspection it has become critical that these systems can make correlations between colour properties and the 3D shape of the objects. The addition of colour line scan cameras into these laser triangulation systems helps solve this problem.

System Integrators have asked Photonfocus for a single-camera solution to support combined colour 2D and 3D inspection systems. A recently published application report from M3C Industrial Automation and Vision in Vision System Design (see the link below) describes the practical implementation of a cork inspection system with combined image analysis.

The system setup combines a 50µm white structured LED light from Effilux (www.effilux.com) and the Photonfocus DR1-D2048x1088C-192-G2-8 high speed colour camera. The high power LED from Effilux enables speckle-free triangulation of the object and white light illumination for colour inspection. The DR1-D2048x1088C-192-G2-8 Photonfocus camera features two important properties for this application; a robust industrial GigE interface with Photonfocus Double-Rate technology captures 1800 line profiles per second at an ROI of 896 x 100 pixels, while the high sensitive colour CMOS sensor ensures images with high colour fidelity. Combining high scan rates, high colour fidelity together with bright illumination are the key issues in 2D/3D colour inspection systems.

New Hyperspectral Imaging Camera

With the rapid growth of customers evaluating hyperspectral imaging technologies, Photonfocus broadens its portfolio by adding the new MV1-D2048x1088-HS03-96-G2 model. The MV1-D2048x1088-HS03-96-G2 implements a hyperspectral area sensor with a 4 x 4 pixel pattern with a spectral range of 470-620nm is covered in 10nm steps with a filter half width of 15nm. For NIR applications, the Photonfocus currently offer the MV1-D2048x1088-HS02-96-G2 model with a 5 x 5 pattern and spectral range of 600-975nm.

The hyperspectral line scan camera MV1-D2048x1088-HS04-96-G2 is in development and will support applications in the VIS/NIR spectral range of 470-900nm with 150 filter bands. Our current MV1-D2048x1088-HS01-96-G2 model covers NIR requirements with a spectral range of 600-1000nm and 100 filter bands.

The Photonfocus hyperspectral cameras are based on IMEC hyperspectral imaging sensors. To ease system integration, the cameras feature a GigE Vision interface. A shaft encoder interface allows precise synchronization of the cameras with the motion of the objects, critical when using line scan hyperspectral cameras.

For higher frame rate applications, the hyperspectral camera models can be configured with a variety of high speed interfaces offered by other Photonfocus camera platforms. OEM module versions of the hyperspectral cameras are available to support embedded solutions.

Photonfocus introduces new QR Camera Series based on QuadRate Technology - Compression technology with guaranteed 4:1 compression rate

Guaranteed data transfer rates of more than 400 Mbyte/s over a standard GigE interface! Is this smart marketing or reality? Following the introduction of the Photonfocus DoubleRate technology with constant 2:1 compression for high speed cameras, motion analysis system customers began asking for higher compression rates at high image quality and Photonfocus accepted the challenge. Photonfocus immediately began development of a camera platform that would feature real-time, high quality, guaranteed 4:1 compression rate of monochrome and RGB Bayer pattern raw data.

The development goals were reached using a wavelet based transformation codec. The codec enables visual lossless compression with automatic switching to lossless compression depending on the image content and is implemented directly into the camera platform FPGA without external memory. The intraframe compression ensures a low latency and simplifies access to the image data.

The QuadRate technology is now available for the HD camera series QR1-D2048x1088-384 and three cameras models for B/W, NIR and colour recording. At full resolution, 2040 x 1088 pixels, the cameras reach 170 fps and at 1024 x 1024 pixels resolution 360 fps without any frame drops. The cameras can easily be used in multi-camera systems. 100% compatibility with the GigEVision and GenICam standards ensure easy implementation.

Photonfocus Releases New 8 Megapixel CMOS Camera Series

With the release of two new 8 megapixel CMOS cameras, MV1-D3360-96-G2-10 (GigE Vision) and MV1-D3360-160-CL-10 (Base Camera Link), Photonfocus broadens their portfolio of CMOSIS CMOS image sensor-based cameras and now offers resolutions ranging from 2 megapixels to 12 megapixels. The CMV8000 CMOS image sensor has a resolution of 3360 x 2496 pixels with a 5.5um pixel. The optical format is 4/3" which allows the usage of cost-efficient C-mount lenses with an image diameter of 23 mm.

The monochrome camera model MV1-D3360-96-G2-10 can be made available upon request with Photonfocus' proprietary Dual-Rate (DR1) or Quad-Rate (QR1) technology allowing for high frame rates that exceed those of standard GigE cameras. Photofocus' 3D04 IP-core with peak detection can also be implemented into this new camera model and provides an excellent solution for fast laser triangulation systems with scan widths over 3K pixels. On request Photonfocus can also supply colour cameras.
