Your gift to Phoenix Family provides critical opportunities, tools and resources to more than 5,200 children, seniors and families, so they can stabilize their lives, avoid homelessness, develop economic self-sufficiency and become active participants in their communities.
Your gift matters.

Looking back, Virginia knows she could be living a very different life. Today, she has a steady new job at a local restaurant and is the proud mom of a vivacious, 10 year old, working and building a safe and secure home life for herself and her daughter. It wasn’t always that way. - Read more at: http://www.phoenixfamily.org/blog/Creating_New_Friends_and_New_Paths.html#sthash.hRSY4Txn.dpuf

Today, we're honoring all who have served. We are humbled by your courage and bravery and honored by your willingness to fight for our freedom. And, today of all days, we assure you that your efforts are remembered.
In Flanders Field
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
- John McCrae, May 1915

Great reading tips we will definitely share with our HIKE Reading Coaches! Thanks for sharing +GradePower Learning
Reading tips!  When you say words, repeat the beginning sounds to reinforce the letter that made that sound.  Then, rhyme the end to reinforce the ending sounds.  The beginning and end of words are the easiest to distinguish and will help your child learn their phonics faster!

Failing to read at grade level by the end of third grade sets up a vicious downward cycle.  As kids advance in school, more of their learning depends on reading to learn.  Struggling readers too often begin to avoid reading out of frustration.  At the same time, classes in science, social studies, history and even math come to rely on more and more on textual analysis, leading them to fall even further behind.  Ultimately, the "Achievement Gap" is actually a "Literacy Gap."

HIKE is not only addressing the achievement gap but is eliminating it.

Yesterday, we launched our 4th HIKE Reading Lab at Parvin Estates where we address this crisis head on.  Visit http://on.fb.me/1vlM7u6 to view more photos of this great new learning space!
