A green flower does not sound very exciting but when it is the luminescent green of Erica sessiliflora it really stands out in the fynbos. But it is not just the colour of the flowers that makes Erica sessiliflora special, out of over 600 species of Erica in the Cape Flora it is also unique being the only species that exhibits serotiny - i.e. it keeps its seeds on the plant until the next fire comes through, after which it releases them.

The Mosquito Lily, Wurmbea glassii, is a very small bulbous plant, only two to three centimetres high. The flowers are minute with six fine petals like the legs of a mosquito. It used to be included in its own genus, Neodregea, on account of a range of unusual features. It has a very scattered distribution across the southern Cape from Somerset West to Grahamstown but is never very common. It occurs in the shade of other plants on shale soils, many of which are at threat from farming and development.

The name Everlasting Flower is quite an exagerration. Mostly they are well past their best by the end of summer. Syncarpha canescens however is an Everlasting Flower or Sewejaartjie that starts flowering in Autumn and continues to look good into winter.

The name may not be very flattering but the fynbos shrub Dogface (Trichocephalus stipularis) is one of my favourite at this time of year. The flowers produce a wonderful fragrance that scents the air in the valley on your way to the waterfall.

Masses of pink pompom flowers of Stoebe capitata line the entrance road to Phillipskop almost as if they have been planted.

The name of the genus Monopsis means that it has "one-face". But although the flowers do look like superficially like faces, the name is a misnomer for most of the species, which should be referred to as two-faced.

There are three prostrate pincushion proteas, Leucospermum, in the Klein River Mountains between Hermanus and Stanford. All three of these grow at Phillipskop and are easy to identify when you look for the right characters. This simple guide shows you how.
