"Thunder Mountain"
I have been wanting to get a shot like this for awhile now. I tend to get excited when I see lightning so I end up just pointing the camera in whatever direction the last strike was at. This time however I wanted to do a little more planning. I checked the direction the storm was moving and got the composition I wanted about 15 mins early in hopes that the storm would pass through the shot. Sure enough I got some lucky strikes that were pretty huge and super fun to watch in person.
While shooting this I was actually out on some very small sand dunes. There was a nice rain shower shortly after I took this photo and then about 10 minutes later a giant sandstorm came rushing through while it was still raining. A very interesting combination of weather, I didn't have any time to pack, so I just through my gear into the car and got out of there. It was the most fun night shooting I have had in awhile.
This is one single file, not stacked. This was taken at about 70mm with a slight crop into the frame in post. The red glow on the edge of the mountain is the last bit of Sunset afterglow from some really vivid light.
I hope you guys enjoy this one, sharing is always appreciated

Just wow

An amazing night in Tahiti.  I'm here for two days before heading to Bora Bora...  the water here is incredible and the lights at night are full of fantasies!

I just climbed one of those ridiculous mountains you saw from the previous photo and I can see a beautiful little town below, under the curving mists that come off the Lijiang river...

Ghost Bunkers

Blue Fish Point, North Head, Sydney, NSW, Australia
NIKON D600 + 16.0-35.0 mm f/4.0 @ 16 mm, 478 sec at f/8, ISO 100

http://www.rc.au.net/blog/2014/09/25/wwii-bunkers-north-head-lightpainting/

+Gerard Blacklock joined me for a light painting session with the WWII Bunkers on North Head.

Time to get all spooky with some EL wire

as with yesterdays image this is a merge of three separate exposures:

– one very long exposure for the EL wire work around the WWI bunker along with the ambient sky and clouds. Gerry on the EL wire on the right of building and me on the left plus flowing towards the camera at the front and up on the roof. This base shot (487 seconds at f/8) I let run well past us finishing the EL wire work to let the ambient burn in a little more. Even with an 8+ minute exposure it was still very under exposed so I had to rescue it in post. In hindsight ISO 200 at f/5.6 would have been more sensible but we only did one take because we couldn’t be stuffed with another ten minute redo :)

– one where Gerry lit just the building and the shrubs to the far left and right using some extreme side lighting (also f/8 at ISO 100)

– and finally one for Gerry’s steel wool spin inside the building and shooting out of the two windows on the left and right (f/8 at ISO 100)

Similar to yesterdays image I’ve opened the three images as separate layers in Photoshop with the EL wire as the top layer, the lighting of the building as the middle layer and the steel wool on the bottom. In addition to Screening the bottom two layers and Linear Dodge on the top layer I’ve used some layer masks to selectively paint out bits of the layers below I didn’t want.

The Photo of 10,000 Cuts, above Guangxi Mountains

Here's a photo from last night, high atop one of the many conical mountains that are in this tight little region of southern China.  To get to this spot, it was very difficult! It was a completely unmarked path, and often not a path at all. I was bleeding from about six different spots just to get climb up here.  The rocks are razor-sharp, and you have to use all four of your appendages to Smeagol up many of the bits!  But once I was up here, the view was absolutely magnificent.

The hardest bit might have been coming down.  Of course I was up here with +Tom Anderson  , and we always stay in these places too late.  It was pitch black, and the way down was very muddy and slippery.  I think we fell down about 5 times each-- and a lot of sliding down mudbanks in our shorts...  and it was sooooo humid... just dripping, muddy, and miserable... but we had a feeling that the shot would turn out well!

Google Buys Word Lens Instant Translation App

According to an announcement last week, Google has purchased Quest Visual the company that made Word Lens ( wordlens.com ), an amazing instant translation app & for a limited time has made it free to download from the Google Play store.

What's cool is it also works with Google Glass.

Quest Visual is joining Google!

By joining Google, we can incorporate Quest Visual's technology into Google Translate's broad language coverage and translation capabilities in the future.

Google Acquires Quest Visual and its (Awesome) Word Lens Translating App  from PCmag

Google has acquired Quest Visual for an undisclosed amount. In doing so, the company has picked up a means for augmenting its translation capabilities in Android and Google Glass, in addition to bolstering its own Google Translate service with Quest Visual's eye-catching technology.   goo.gl/94Wjo3
