Some observations on Yelp after a 3-year experiment:
I like to support local businesses that I want to stay in business, I love to write, and as an SEO I must experiment every now and then. That's why in spring of 2013 I started crawling around in Yelp's guts, as just another local reviewer. I'd written a couple reviews on Yelp a few years earlier ...

Useful troubleshooting from +Colan Nielsen:
As many of you reading this probably already know, the four main aggregators of business data in the U.S.A. are Factual, ExpressUpdate, Acxiom, and Localeze. Local SEO's have often debated which of these players have the highest level of trust and influence on the data that appears on Google Local listings. From our observations over the last four years, we most often see Express Update being the one that Google pulls from most. For example, we o...

Some good news from Yahoo, for once:
It appears that you can once again update your Yahoo Local listing for free, without having to sign up for Yext PowerListings. A few months ago, Yahoo completely turned over listings-management duties to Yext. Over the course of several years Yahoo had gone from a important (if second-fiddle) ...

I didn't think Yahoo Local could make itself any less relevant, but...
As a local search engine, Yahoo has long been the equivalent of an '80s hair band, still squeaking along decades after its heyday. For the last few years, its only real use to your local visibility was that it still ranked well in Google for brand-name searches.

The +LinkAssistant rank tracker seems to have a new way of tracking local rankings, now that our trusty default search location button is no more.

(I was given a registration key to try it out.  I'm looking into how accurate the localized tracking is.)
Introducing a completely new system of sending localized queries to Google

Hi +Darren Shaw!

Aleh here, Rank Tracker's founder.

First of all, thank you for your attention and stepping into the discussion.

It wasn't our intention to state that Rank Tracker is the only to check local rankings now.

On the contrary, the explanatory article that announces the feature gives an overview of all the variety of checking local rankings available on the market ("near" parameter in the URL, "uule" parameter, location emulation in Google Chrome).

However, the solution we came up with in Rank Tracker is unique. It's based on passing the exact GPS coordinates, and is not limited to specific regions of the world (e.g. the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand only), restricted to large cities only, and such. In fact, Rank Tracker's local data can be provided even for a particular street address.

With that in mind, we're pretty excited with this solution introduced. However, we do realize other providers have solutions of their own to deliver local ranking data, including the industry-favorite Whitespark Local Rank Tracker, which we have great respect for.

These +Imprezzio Marketing people keep cranking 'em out.  Another handy tip from +Joy Hawkins:
Share the joy Share the joy I often hear people in the Local SEO industry complain about Google My Business (GMB) phone support. I would sit there dreading the calls before I made them, knowing that I’d have to repeat myself several times, wait on hold, and possibly argue when given wrong information. I have good news. I haven’t used …Share the joy

Some practical tips from +Corey Barnett if you're considering Amazon Home Services:
I've wanted to write about “Amazon Local SEO” for a while now. I had it planned out. But then last year Amazon retired their daily-deals program, at which point 50% of my content became about as timely and relevant as MTV. Oh well. But the other part I wanted to write about was Amazon Home ...

Half SEO tips, half Cosmo-style advice, all applicable to SEOs local and non-local alike:
I've seen SEOs do all kinds of dumb things for clients. Far less often do I see them follow some wise practices that can help them get better results, and with less heartache. My suggestions also can help you if you are your own SEO person. This may have a slight bent toward local search (as you ...

Excellent troubleshooting tip in here from +Joy Hawkins:
If you do SEO for a brand that has multiple locations and offices, you'll want to pay attention. Using Google's &filter=0 could make the difference in your local SEO management.

How many review sites do you know about?  I've found 166 so far.  Check out the list:
How complete is your collection of reviews? To know that, you'll need to know of all the sites where customers can (and should) review your business. I've found 166 local review sites so far. Some you already know about – and may even have reviews on – but others are overlooked opportunities.
