Fun post here from Synup:
Local SEO is becoming an essential part of doing business. With more customers relying on search engines for information and purchase decisions, it’s important that every business works hard to maintain their digital presence. It takes a lot of hard work, some strong tools, and above all, consistent maintenance to get the job done. Aside …

Had a great interview with +david oremland about how to use sponsorships of local meetup groups for local SEO and general smart marketing:
I've talked about sponsoring local meetup groups as a way of smart offline and online non-Google marketing, and as a way to earn good links. Last December I did a post on how to find Meetup.com groups that need sponsors. In my recent interview on the LocalU blog I mentioned it again, ...

Fascinating read from +Bill Slawski.  I could see this dovetailing into Google's review filter.
A Google patent application shows how Google may use Social Media information to improve the quality of reviews it shows people for Goods and Services.

What can Google's awful new 3-pack layout teach you?  That maybe you need to conquer a niche if you want your local SEO to get you anywhere.  15 reasons...
Google's dreadful new 3-pack of local results is a push toward AdWords, without a doubt. They may also pass it off as a usability improvement, but it's mostly classic Mountain View skullduggery. But I think it also at least hints at what kinds of local-business results Google wants to show when ...

Feel like you're going nowhere fast on your "content" strategy for local search visibility?  3 ways to make easier progress:
You shudder at the thought of having to write content for your site or pay someone to write it until the day you sell your business or buy Depends. Don't get me wrong: writing and sharing your best info over a period of months or years can have enormous payoff. My post “100 Practical Ideas for ...

#yelp  is showing new messages to reviewers before they post:
I was mucking around in Yelp yesterday and noticed a new message when I was logged in and viewing a business's page. Here's what Yelp users see if they're viewing a business with 5 or more unfiltered reviews: “Start your review.” Understandable enough. Yelp wants more “recommended” reviews on ...

+david oremland Hehe...well, I'm just repenting for getting all Val Kilmer (circa '00s) some years ago.  I'm always deserving of sass, though.

I've also just found that the more sedentary / white-collar your work is (e.g. local SEO), the more important it is to work up a sweat one way or another.

Thought-provoking research from +Casey Meraz:
Google recently rolled out a major change to how they display local results in search results. This study shows how user behavior has changed with these new results.

Not sure how to find the best 3 Facebook "Local Business" categories - when you can't even see the nearly 800 available to you?  I've put together a complete list of categories:
Pick the wrong Facebook categories or not enough of them and your local-search visibility will suffer. Not only in Facebook, but also likely in Google (because Facebook results are often all over page 1). The trouble is once you've picked the basic “Local Business” category, you can't see all ...
